On April 8, Mr. Ho Van Mung - Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee just signed a decision recognizing My Hoa Hung commune as an island commune under An Giang province.
My Hoa Hung has a natural area of 19.65km2, completely isolated between the four sides of the Hau River. The commune is known as the "Green Pearl in the Hau River", known as the hometown of Chairman Ton Duc Thang, famous for Cu Lao Ong Ho.
With a unique geographical location located entirely in the middle of the Hau River, My Hoa Hung has natural conditions and transportation infrastructure typical of the island, even though it is located inland.
To date, An Giang province has 2 "sweetwater" island communes located between the Tien and Hau rivers recognized as island communes, which are Cu Lao Gieng and My Hoa Hung.
My Hoa Hung commune has advantages in terms of ecotourism development potential, many famous cultural and historical sites. Especially the President Ton Duc Thang Memorial Area - a special national relic site, a place to preserve memorabilia about his life and career.

My Hoa Hung commune is 1 of 6 communes that have not implemented arrangement and maintained the status quo.
Communes and wards recognized as island communes must meet 2 criteria. First, 50% or more of the natural area is an island or archipelago according to the provisions of Article 19 of the Vietnam Law of the Sea in 2012 (amended and supplemented in the Law on Organization of Local Governments dated June 16, 2025) or has the entire natural area as a islet isolated from the mainland, with conditions similar to islands.
Second, there are permanent residents or armed forces stationed on islands, archipelagos, and islets to participate in managing and protecting national defense, security, and sea and island sovereignty.
