Ung Van Khiem road, less than 2 km long, is often congested, Ho Chi Minh City is promoting expansion to 30m with a capital of 4,592 billion VND.

Ung Van Khiem road is less than 2 km long but often falls into traffic jams during rush hours, affecting the travel of people and students. Ho Chi Minh City is promoting procedures to prepare for the investment project to expand this road to 30m.

Ung Van Khiem street (Thanh My Tay ward) is one of the routes that often experiences congestion during rush hour. In the morning, traffic from residential areas, apartments and surrounding areas pours into the center, causing the road surface to quickly become overloaded. In the afternoon, the same situation is repeated when people finish work and students return home.

According to Mr. Vo Thanh Tai, a long-time resident in the area, congestion on Ung Van Khiem street occurs frequently, especially since students returned to school.

When students have summer vacation, the roads are slightly clearer. When students re-enroll, traffic jams start from about 7 am to 7:15 am, lasting until about 8:30 am. In the afternoon, from about 5 pm to 7 pm is the peak traffic jam time," Mr. Tai said.

According to Mr. Tai, the frequent congestion points are the Dai Liet Si intersection and D2 intersection. This is also a route that concentrates a large number of people going to work, students going to school and residents from surrounding apartment buildings moving to the center.

Ms. Le Thi Thanh Xuan, who has lived in the area for many years, said that there were times when vehicles were almost standing still on the road.

During rush hour, sometimes there are traffic jams. When it's sunny, it's still better, but when it rains, it's very hard. When it rains, there are both traffic jams and flooding, so the road home is further and more difficult," Ms. Xuan shared.

This road section is less than 2 km long, the road surface is about 10-12m wide, with a scale of 2-4 lanes but traffic jams are frequent. According to people, one of the reasons why Ung Van Khiem is often congested is that the existing road surface is quite small while the travel demand is increasing.

Faced with prolonged congestion, Ho Chi Minh City is promoting procedures to prepare for the investment project to expand Ung Van Khiem street (Thanh My Tay ward) to 30m, with a total estimated capital of 4,592 billion VND.

The Traffic Board is preparing a Pre-feasibility Study Report, as a basis for Ho Chi Minh City to consider investment policies this year. According to the preliminary plan, the route is about 1.8 km long, from Dai Liet Si intersection to Nguyen Huu Canh intersection (Saigon Bridge). The road surface is currently 10-12m wide, with a scale of 2-4 lanes, expected to be expanded to 30m with 6 lanes.

The project is identified as a key infrastructure project, prioritized investment, expected to be completed in 2029. The expansion is expected to solve traffic bottlenecks, improve connectivity and reduce congestion on the route.
