Ba Che district is one of the localities with strengths in forestry but also suffered heavy damage after storm Yagi.
More than 18,000 hectares of forest, mainly acacia, cypress and pine trees 2 years old or older, were broken, with estimated damage of about 550 billion VND.
Of these, more than 14,000 hectares of forest are managed by local people, the rest belongs to organizations and businesses.
To promptly overcome the consequences after the storm, the district issued a document directing communes to review and compile support records according to Decision 1568/QD-UBND (dated May 18, 2017) of the Provincial People's Committee; organized meetings to guide communes and towns to compile support records for forest planting families.
Up to now, the district has received notices from 2,530 households with damaged forest area of 14,125 hectares. Of which, localities in the district have reviewed, counted, and appraised over 3,300 hectares of nearly 700 households; prepared documents for the first phase of support for nearly 2,600 hectares of 606 households.
The areas damaged from 30-70% are 882 hectares will be supported with 2 million VND/ha, over 70% is more than 1,700 hectares will be supported with 4 million VND/ha. The estimated support cost is about 8.6 billion VND. For the remaining 1,924 records with 11,636 hectares, the district continues to direct specialized departments to handle the procedures.
Ba Che District is also promoting the conversion of crop structure to replace low-value trees such as acacia and eucalyptus with trees that are more resistant to storms, floods and pests. To maintain income for people during this difficult period, policies to encourage livestock farming and crop cultivation under forest canopy are also being implemented.
Vice Chairman of Ba Che District People's Committee, Mr. Khieu Anh Tu, said: "96% of the district's population depends on forestry. Based on the demand and ability to supply seeds of over 30 facilities in the area, the current number of over 2 million seedlings only ensures the supply of seeds for about 500 hectares, this is a difficulty of the locality and the locality has reported to the province about this.
On average, the district plants about 3,500 hectares of new forest every year. With the current damage of about 18,000 hectares of forest land, it will take about 2 years to replant.
While waiting for the new forest exploitation cycle after the storm, the district directed relevant agencies to review job opportunities and mobilize people to participate in job markets and look for jobs at businesses inside and outside the district.
The forest damage in Ba Che reflects the general picture of the forestry sector in Quang Ninh province, with total damage of about 6,400 billion VND and more than 117,000 hectares of forest damaged. To quickly overcome the situation and help people stabilize their lives soon, the province has launched a 30-day cleanup campaign, mobilizing local forces including forest rangers, police, soldiers and youth volunteers, expected to be completed before October 31, 2024.
