On July 15, Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee confirmed that Mr. Hoang Nam - Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee has requested relevant units to strengthen environmental protection in the area of the Quang Tri Airport Construction Project.
The direction of the leaders of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee was issued after the Department of Agriculture and Environment had the results of environmental quality monitoring in the airport project area.
Accordingly, Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee requests the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board and Quang Tri Airport Co., Ltd. to continue to fully and seriously implement environmental protection contents according to the Decision approving the environmental impact assessment report that has been approved.
These units are responsible for regularly maintaining the monitoring and supervision of air quality in the construction area. At the same time, the investor and contractor must continuously review and promptly apply dust reduction measures (such as increasing the frequency of spraying water to suppress dust, covering vehicles carrying materials) and control other environmental impacts arising during construction.
The Provincial People's Committee emphasized the goal of ensuring that it does not affect the lives of neighboring people and absolutely does not allow further petitions and reflections of people's grievances to arise.
The Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to preside over and coordinate with relevant agencies, units and localities to strengthen the supervision and periodic and unscheduled inspection of the compliance with legal regulations on environmental protection right at the project construction site.
In addition, the People's Committee of Cua Viet commune is assigned the task of continuing to closely coordinate to supervise the implementation of pollution reduction measures by contractors; promptly grasp the situation and reflect arising pollution issues to the Department of Agriculture and Environment for coordination in considering and strictly handling according to regulations.
Lao Dong Newspaper's investigation shows that on July 14, the dusty situation at the airport project causing pollution, affecting people's lives, still occurred.
Previously, Lao Dong Newspaper had many articles reflecting closely the situation of dust rising densely from the airport project construction site, causing dozens of households in Lam Xuan, Nhi Ha, Nhi Trung villages (Cua Viet commune, Quang Tri province) to be disrupted. People have repeatedly reported dust pollution to the People's Committee of Cua Viet commune, even flocking to the construction site area to protest. To limit dust, many watering trucks on internal roads in the project are mobilized, but on days of strong winds, dust still covers the adjacent residential area, making life very suffocating.
