The waste collection and treatment site in Group 1 Minh Khai (Ha Giang 2 ward) has been in use since 2021 on an area of over 2 hectares. The waste is treated in the form of landfill, with an initial design capacity of about 30 - 40m3/day and night.
After nearly 25 years of use, the landfill is often overloaded. Every day, it is receiving about 70 tons of garbage, equivalent to 138m3, 4 times the original design. Overloaded, garbage is congested and smells foul, affecting the lives of many households.

Recorded by PV in the last days of December 2025, the landfill is located in a high hill area. Below are the densely populated residential areas of Ha Giang 1 and Ha Giang 2 wards. Standing hundreds of meters away from the landfill, you can smell the strong stench.
The waste here is piled up with congestion and flies. Wastewater from the landfill leaks thickly, giving off a foul smell.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Lien (Ha Giang 2 ward) said that the landfill has existed here for a long time. The overload situation greatly affects the lives of many households.
"The unpleasant stench affects people's health. The most frightening thing is that during the rainy season, the wastewater from high hills flowing down is very dangerous.
Hopefully, there will soon be a final solution to ensure people's lives," said Ms. Lien.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam (Ha Giang 2 ward), the landfill is located on a high hill, causing many consequences. During the rainy season, wastewater will seep into the soil and flow down to the residential area below. There needs to be a relocation plan or waste treatment technology to ensure safety.
On December 24, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Ha Minh Man - Chairman of Ha Giang 2 Ward People's Committee said that the locality has received many complaints from people about the overload at the landfill.
"There is currently no other landfill, if it is expanded, it will not be in accordance with the plan. The environmental company has also had treatment plans to prevent wastewater from flowing into residential areas.
This is the dry season, temporarily only being able to level to limit the impact. In the long term, there must be other options for the province," the leader added.

According to Mr. Nguyen The Phuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tuyen Quang, the landfill has been overloaded after many renovations, especially after recent natural disasters.
The unit has inspected the situation and requested Ha Giang Urban and Environment Joint Stock Company to implement temporary solutions such as leveling, covering garbage, and drainage. In the long term, the units will advise the Provincial People's Committee to select an investor to build a waste treatment area that meets standards, replacing the current landfill.
It is known that in 2010, Ha Giang province (old) decided to close the landfill. By 2018, there will be an orientation to attract investment in building a waste treatment plant using new technology.
However, up to now, investors have not been attracted, while the amount of waste continues to increase, affecting people's lives.
