Environmental quality has not met requirements
On March 14, the Hanoi People's Committee coordinated with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to organize a scientific workshop on "Current situation and solutions to handle urgent problems in environmental protection in Hanoi Capital".
In his opening speech, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh emphasized that Hanoi is a special urban area with a rapid urbanization rate and a high mechanical population. As the center of the Red River Delta, Hanoi faces many environmental challenges such as air pollution, overloaded waste and wastewater treatment.
Hanoi City is currently resolutely implementing many activities to improve the environment, such as: Handling air pollution is implementing solutions to reduce private vehicles, increase investment, put into use public passenger transport, convert to green transportation, eliminate the situation of burning honeycomb coal, increase road washing, environmental sanitation monitoring of construction works...
Hanoi also focuses on treating wastewater and cleaning up rivers. Typically, Hanoi City is urgently implementing solutions to replenish water for To Lich River, reviving the river according to the direction of General Secretary To Lam (Hanoi is determined to complete the task of replenishing water for To Lich River in September 2025). Hanoi City is piloting the modernization of waste collection and waste classification at source in 5 inner-city districts.
However, according to Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, the quality of the environment in Hanoi has not met requirements, especially the quality of the air environment.
Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh hopes that the workshop will receive the support of experts, scientists, organizations, and businesses, contributing creative ideas and feasible solutions to quickly improve environmental quality, contributing to building a civilized, civilized, and modern Hanoi.
Clear people, clear work, clear responsibility
Contributing opinions to Hanoi, Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, mentioned the current hot issue of air pollution, with a high PM2.5 index, exceeding the permitted standards by 1.5-2 times for many days.
According to Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, the sources of air pollution include traffic; industrial parks; urban construction works; livestock farms, fertilizer use in cultivation (secondary PM2.5 generation); burning agricultural byproducts after harvest... and from neighboring provinces such as: Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc...
Dr. Hoang Duong Tung highly appreciated Hanoi's determination such as banning 16-seat vehicles from operating in the old town, having a roadmap to complete key traffic projects; building an automatic air monitoring system; implementing a roadmap to apply Euro 4.5 emission standards; converting some bus routes to electric vehicles; Minimizing honeycomb coal stoves... However, the efficiency is not high because there is no specialized department for handling environmental pollution.
Therefore, Dr. Hoang Duong Tung proposed that each locality needs to have specific targets and responsibilities for air pollution reduction (clear people, clear work, clear responsibilities, clear progress, clear efficiency).
Hanoi needs to prioritize green transportation, using clean fuel, and checking motorbike emissions in the inner city. By 2030, all buses will be converted to electric buses (5 years faster than planned); limit the registration of new motorbikes running on gasoline/diesel; tighten some industrial emission standards for facilities in the capital and the capital region; install cameras to control construction sites...
According to Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha - Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the application of science and technology is necessary for Hanoi to have thorough solutions in environmental management and protection.
