On March 14, the Hanoi People's Committee coordinated with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to organize a scientific workshop on "Current situation and solutions to handle urgent problems in environmental protection in Hanoi Capital".
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh said that the capital Hanoi is a special urban area, with a rapid urbanization rate, increasing the mechanical population very large. At the same time, Hanoi is the center of the Red River Delta, the region with the highest economic growth rate in the country. With this characteristic, Hanoi always faces many environmental problems such as air pollution, overload in solid waste treatment, wastewater, etc.
Therefore, environmental protection in Hanoi Capital is always a key issue, of top concern to the Central Government and the leaders of the city. This is reflected in many important documents of the Central Government and the City and has been organized and implemented in the past time.

According to the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, the 2024 Capital Law has specifically outlined a number of tasks that need to be implemented in determining low-emission zones. In the Capital Planning, environmental issues are set out as the top priority task among the key and urgent tasks that the Capital needs to solve in the period of 2025 - 2030.
Hanoi City is currently resolutely implementing many activities to improve the environment. However, the quality of the environment in Hanoi has not met requirements, especially the quality of the air environment.
To solve this "compute", Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh hopes that through the workshop, experts, scientists, organizations and businesses will join hands, accompany and share with experts and scientists to contribute many creative and enthusiastic ideas, feasible solutions that need to be prioritized to quickly improve the quality of the city's environment, contributing to building a civilized, civilized and modern Hanoi Capital.

Speaking at the workshop, Prof. Dr. Chau Van Minh - Director of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology said that Hanoi as well as many large cities in the world in the development process have to face many serious environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, household waste, solid waste, etc.
"The above problems not only affect the quality of life and public health but also have the potential to reduce Hanoi's ability to attract investment as well as the sustainable development of the capital" - Prof. Dr. Chau Van Minh commented.
According to Prof. Dr. Chau Van Minh, with the above situation of the Hanoi environment, finding effective solutions to solve urgent environmental problems is a top priority task.
Contributing opinions to Hanoi, Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, mentioned the current very "hot" problem of air pollution, with a high PM2.5 index, exceeding the permitted standards by 1.5-2 times for many days. The number of days with good air quality accounts for only 15%, an average of 50%, poor and bad 34%.
Dr. Hoang Duong Tung highly appreciated Hanoi's determination such as banning 16-seat vehicles from operating in the old town, having a roadmap to complete key traffic projects; building an automatic air monitoring system; implementing a roadmap to apply Euro 4.5 emission standards; converting some bus routes to electric vehicles; minimizing honeycomb coal stoves... However, the efficiency is not high because there is no specialized department for handling environmental pollution.
Therefore, Dr. Hoang Duong Tung proposed that each locality needs to have specific targets and responsibilities for air pollution reduction (clear people, clear work, clear responsibilities, clear progress, clear efficiency). In addition, Hanoi needs to prioritize green transportation, using clean fuel, and checking motorbike emissions in the inner city.
