At 5:11 PM on March 10, 2026, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center received information from Naval Region 4 and the captain of ship QNg 90459 TS about the squid fishing boat of Quang Ngai fishermen having engine failure and drifting at sea. There are 36 fishermen on board.
Previously, at 4:45 pm on March 10, 2026, ship HQ 950 departed from Hon Tre island (Nha Trang) to perform a mission to rescue 36 fishermen and ship QNg 90459 TS.
The current location of ship QNg 90459 TS has coordinates 12-00N; 109-43E (about 28 nautical miles from Hon Tre island in the Southeast direction, about 26 nautical miles from Cam Linh cape (Cam Ranh City) in the Northeast direction). The ship is drifting at a speed of 2.5 nautical miles/hour, in the direction of 200°.
Currently, ship HQ 950 has contacted ship QNg 90459 TS via MF/HF channel, frequency 7903 kHz. The weather in the area has Northeast wind level 5-6, waves 2-3 m high.
Squid fishing vessel QNg-90459. TS captained by Mr. Ngo Van Can (54 years old, residing in Binh Son commune, Quang Ngai province). On board were 36 fishermen, engaged in squid fishing. The vessel departed from Binh Thanh Border Guard Station on February 28 to go to sea for seafood exploitation. On March 6, the vessel broke down in the sea.
After temporary repair, the fishermen steered the boat ashore. However, by the morning of March 9, the boat continued to have engine problems and could not be repaired, so it was forced to drift at sea.
According to the family of captain Ngo Van Can, at the time of March 9, ship QNg-90459. TS was about 40 nautical miles from the mainland of Vung Ro area. The ship owner's family reported the incident to Binh Thanh Border Guard Station and local authorities for support.
On the morning of March 10, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim - wife of Mr. Ngo Van Can, residing in My Tan village, Binh Son commune, said that on the same morning, Mr. Can used a satellite phone to contact his family. Fishing boat QNg-90459. TS was drifting at sea, all crew members were safe, but some crew members had a fever.
