Trillions of VND invested in Vinh Long irrigation project waiting to be effective

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - Irrigation works worth about 3,600 billion VND are being accelerated for handover, removing obstacles to promote efficiency.

Increased landslides put pressure on irrigation works

From the beginning of 2026 to now, the situation of landslides and subsidence of riverbanks and coastlines in Vinh Long continues to be complicated, affecting production land, assets and people's lives.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in 2025, the whole province experienced 137 landslide points and locations, losing over 7.7km of coastline, riverbanks, canals, and ditches; affecting more than 521 households, estimated damage of over 25.1 billion VND.

Among them, 6 large landslide areas were declared emergency situations, with a total length of over 9.1km. From the beginning of 2026 to now, the whole province continues to experience 160 landslide and subsidence points with a total length of nearly 11.2km.

Landslide points have affected more than 264 households, causing damage to 10.5ha of fruit trees, about 60,000 giant river prawns, total estimated damage of over 17.9 billion VND.

Faced with the above situation, levels, sectors and localities have deployed reinforcement and repair of 88 locations with a total length of more than 12km, with funding of about 147 billion VND from the provincial budget, the Disaster Prevention and Control Fund and other legal sources.

Among them, 4 projects under emergency construction have been completed, accepted and put into use. The Co Chien riverbank erosion treatment project in Rach Sau hamlet, Quoi Thien commune has a total investment of more than 10 billion VND, and 10 billion VND has been allocated from the provincial budget in 2026.

The construction unit has completed concrete pile casting, material and equipment gathering. The Provincial Agricultural Project Management Board is coordinating with localities to adjust reinforcement solutions, reduce the affected land area and mobilize people to hand over the site. The project is expected to be completed in October 2026.

Removing bottlenecks for irrigation projects to be effective

Along with overcoming landslides, Vinh Long has handed over and received 34/37 irrigation projects, with a total investment of about 3,600 billion VND for Tra Vinh Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Co., Ltd. to operate, and the remaining 3 projects are expected to be completed before August 26, 2026.

The handover and management process is still entangled with dossiers, capital sources, and procedures. According to Mr. Le Quang Rang, the 220m landslide section on the La Ghi canal needs about 12 billion VND; the 360m section on the Tra On riverbank needs about 100 billion VND but has not been allocated.

The Sau Luoc open culvert cannot be handed over due to lost records, and the value of assets has not been determined; it is necessary to prioritize funds to overcome landslides and temporarily assign the project management and operation unit according to the current situation," Mr. Rang added.
