Nguyen Tat Thanh road is about 3 km long, passing through the areas of Xom Chieu, Vinh Hoi and Khanh Hoi wards. This is the main traffic axis connecting the South with the city center. However, the existing road surface is only 8 - 14 m wide, organized in 2 directions with 4 mixed lanes. This design currently does not meet the actual traffic flow.

According to the Department of Construction, the road is suffering a vehicle load exceeding 140% of its designed capacity. During peak hours of morning and evening, the entire road surface is overloaded. Vehicles from all directions flock towards Tan Thuan bridge and the city center, causing prolonged traffic jams on the main axis.
Traffic jams on Nguyen Tat Thanh street lead to localized congestion at intersections such as Hoang Dieu, Ton Dan. Due to the cramped traffic space, motorbikes, cars and heavy trucks have to move in the same lane. To escape the traffic jam, many people drive motorbikes onto the sidewalk or change direction to small alleys along the route, causing traffic in the surrounding area to be chaotic and unsafe.

To definitively solve this black spot of congestion, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has approved a plan to expand the road boundary of Nguyen Tat Thanh street to at least 8 lanes. The expansion direction is implemented encroaching on the Nha Rong - Khanh Hoi port area. This solution plays a key role in unblocking traffic capacity at the southern gateway.

The road expansion is within the overall planning plan of Nha Rong - Khanh Hoi Port area with a total area of about 39.51 ha. Ho Chi Minh City has abolished the policy of assigning the old investor to build a high-rise housing complex here to focus on rebuilding the urban space.

According to the new planning orientation, most of the land fund in the port area will be re-allocated to prioritize the development of green park space, passenger terminals and public amenities. At the same time, the project will be implemented synchronously with the plan to upgrade Tan Thuan 1 bridge and expand the Ho Chi Minh Relic - Museum Area, aiming to create a spacious cultural and ecological space along the Saigon River.
