In recent days, the water level of the Thao River (the main stream of the Red River) in Lao Cai and Phu Tho has continuously risen and is currently at a high level.

September is the transitional season, often experiencing widespread heavy rains due to low pressure troughs combined with storms or tropical depressions.

More than 2 years ago, around mid-September 2025, many people still did not forget the large flood on rivers in the North due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3 Yagi.

At that time, floods on the Thao River in Yen Bai (now Lao Cai province) and Phu Tho had exceeded alarm levels, even exceeding the historical flood peak.

September 2026, although no major floods have appeared, in recent days, on the rivers of the Red River basin, the water level of the Thao River at Yen Bai station (Lao Cai province) and Phu Tho station has continuously changed in an upward trend.

As on September 10, monitoring data showed that the water level of the Thao River at Yen Bai station at 7 am was 24.88m, at the same time at Phu Tho station at 12.12m.

After many consecutive days of rising water, at 1 am on September 17, the water level at Yen Bai station had risen to 28.46m, at the same time at Phu Tho station at 13.79m.

According to reporters' records on the morning of September 17, although the water level of the Thao River has not exceeded the alarm levels, it can be seen that the river flow is vast, cloudy, and flowing swiftly.

With the current water level, waterway transport vehicles, ferries/cross-river ferries can easily move, without difficulties like in the dry season.

Mr. Tran Van Ton - owner of Tinh Cuong ferry wharf (connecting Chi Tien commune with Hung Viet commune) - shared: "With moderate river floods like this, ferries/boats move very easily, without needing to build more wharves to pick up and drop off passengers or go around sand dunes on the river like when the water is shallow".

According to the Forecast Bulletin, hydrological warning time just issued on September 16 by the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (from September 16-20), in the past 5 days, on the Thao River, the water level at Yen Bai station and Phu Tho station has changed slowly in the first days, rising in the last day.

It is forecasted that in the next 5 days, the water level of the Thao River will continue to rise in the first 1-2 days, then decrease. At Yen Bai station, the highest level may rise to 28.50m, at Phu Tho station, the highest level may be at 14.50m.
