From the beginning of 2026 to now, the situation of riverbank and coastal erosion in Can Tho City has been complicated, causing damage to houses, property, traffic infrastructure and directly affecting people's lives and production. While localities are making efforts to handle it temporarily, the source of funding to fundamentally overcome it is still a big problem.
People and authorities respond to landslides
Mr. Banh Phuoc An - Chairman of Thoi An Hoi Commune People's Committee (Can Tho City) said that in the immediate future, the locality will mobilize people to relocate from dangerous landslide areas, sign commitments not to live in areas at high risk of landslides. The commune also allocated a part of the funds to temporarily reinforce landslide points, and at the same time sent a document to the City People's Committee and relevant departments and branches requesting attention and support for remediation.
According to Mr. Banh Phuoc An, natural disaster prevention and control work in the past time has had positive coordination between the government and people. People are gradually becoming more aware of the damage to property and facilities caused by landslides. Local authorities are also promoting propaganda and mobilization to raise people's awareness of proactive prevention and response.
However, the biggest difficulty is still funding. The commune's resources are still limited, so it can mainly only implement temporary remedial measures.
In An Lac Thon commune, Mr. Phan Long Duc - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee - informed that the area is large, the river system is intertwined, causing serious riverbank erosion, concentrated in the Rach Vop, Cai Con and Cai Cham rivers.
The locality mobilizes people to participate in reinforcing and overcoming areas at risk of landslides. However, due to limited funding, if not handled promptly, especially before the high tides in August and September of the lunar calendar, landslides may continue to affect fruit orchards and people's lives.
Waiting for more than 1,500 billion VND of resources to overcome
According to Mr. Cao Minh Thom - Chairman of Nhon My Commune People's Committee, the locality has recorded more than 100 landslide points, with a total length of more than 1,600m. Landslides have cut off 5 key roads, completely swept away 9 houses, and property damage is estimated at more than 6.2 billion VND.
Over the past time, Nhon My commune has made efforts to overcome more than 32 landslide points and reinforce many small landslide points. For large-scale points, the locality is waiting for support resources from the City to handle them.
Statistics show that from the beginning of 2026 to now, Can Tho City has experienced more than 272 riverbank and coastal erosion points, with a total length of more than 34,452m. The total cost of reinforcement and repair is about 1,618 billion VND.
In 2026, from regular expenditure sources, capital decentralized to commune management and the City Disaster Prevention and Control Fund, more than 47.3 billion VND has been allocated to reinforce and overcome 65 landslide points, with a total length of more than 11,786m. However, there are still about 207 riverbank landslide points, with a total length of about 17,736m, without reinforcement funds. The capital demand to handle these points is about 1,571 billion VND.
Leaders of the Can Tho City Sub-Department of Irrigation said that in order to soon handle landslide points, the Department of Agriculture and Environment proposed that the City People's Committee allocate resources. In which, for 8 landslide points that have announced emergency situations, it is proposed to allocate about 1,296 billion VND from the City budget for remediation.
For the remaining 199 points, with a total length of about 13,118m, the Department proposed to allocate about 274.383 billion VND to support 20 communes and wards along the Hau River that are heavily affected by landslides.
