In recent days, caged fish raised on the Bo River, passing through Quang Dien commune (Hue City), have died en masse, causing great damage to many households. Most of the dead fish are commercial fish, raised for 18 months to 2 years and preparing for sale.
In just one night, many households from preparing for harvest had to pick up dead fish and sell off the remaining live fish to recoup some of the investment capital, but the damage was still very large.
According to Quang Dien Commune People's Committee, the initial cause was determined to be erratic weather, poor water circulation causing reduced dissolved oxygen, causing fish to suffocate. At the scene, a lot of air bubbles appeared on the water surface, showing abnormal signs in the water environment.
Local authorities have coordinated with specialized agencies to inspect the scene, statistically assess damage and guide people to implement response measures.
Mr. Hoang Van Minh Chau - Vice Chairman of Quang Dien Commune People's Committee said that the locality recommends that people regularly monitor water quality, clean cages, create flow, use aerators to increase dissolved oxygen, and at the same time expand the cage density to limit damage if bad weather continues.
By July 6, Quang Dien commune recorded more than 30 cages of 20 households affected, with over 6 tons of dead fish. In Thanh Luong residential group (Kim Tra ward), about 20 fish cages also experienced a similar situation.
Hue City Fisheries Sub-Department requested people to collect and destroy dead fish in accordance with regulations, not to discharge them into the environment; and at the same time implement technical measures such as sparsening cages, increasing aeration in the early morning and closely monitoring weather and water environment developments to minimize damage.
