Kon Tum - In recent years, the lives of people in the mountainous areas in Tu Mo Rong district have gradually changed, developing thanks to medicinal plants and developing tourism.

On June 7, the People's Committee of Tu Mo Rong district said that the unit is preparing for the merger and removal of the district level; the locality will only have 4 key communes left.

The innovation of the model and merger of State administrative agencies aims to help the government get closer and closer to the lives of people in mountainous areas.

After 20 years of establishment and development, Tu Mo Rong district, one of the poorest areas in the Central Highlands, has now changed and risen from hardship.

Mr. Vo Trung Manh - Chairman of Tu Mo Rong District People's Committee - said: "The district was established in 2005, is a mountainous district with special difficulties, with a low starting point in terms of economy, infrastructure and public services".

According to Mr. Manh, at the time of establishment, almost all communes and villages did not have roads, the poverty rate was over 70%, people mainly lived on self-sufficient and self-sufficient farming.

But after 20 years, with determination and inner strength, Tu Mo Rong has made great strides in many fields. Up to now, 100% of villages have national grid electricity, and traffic routes have been expanded to most communes. The poverty rate has decreased to below 30%.

Average income per capita increased sharply, from 18 million VND/person/year to 47 million VND/person/year. District budget revenue also grew significantly, from 40 billion VND to nearly 70 billion VND.

In particular, Tu Mo Rong has become a key medicinal herb area of the Central Highlands, with an area of over 3,000 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng and thousands of hectares of other precious medicinal plants.

"The district owns the largest Ngoc Linh ginseng garden in the world. This is the foundation for developing a tourism model to visit Ngoc Linh ginseng national park, gradually affirming the brand of "the ginseng capital" of Vietnam on the international map", Mr. Manh proudly said.

In agriculture, Tu Mo Rong is gradually forming a sustainable production chain under the forest canopy, linking cultivation with forest protection and ecotourism development. This direction not only enhances economic value but also creates more jobs for local people.

In recent years, Tu Mo Rong has proactively promoted digital transformation, from tracing the origin of agricultural products, supporting farmers to sell goods through e-commerce platforms, covering community wifi, to remote teaching...

The district also pioneered the application of AI and digital platforms in administrative management and education to improve service efficiency for people.

The local government hopes that with the work of merging provinces and removing district levels, local people will have more resources to invest in socio-economic development. Thereby, realizing the goal of making Kon Tum a large-scale medicinal herb center of the country.
