On September 22, Khanh Hoa Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Limited Liability Company said that the unit is urgently implementing solutions to dismantle the Cai Nha Trang river saltwater dam at Vinh Phuong bridge location.
Informing Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Thai Hung - Director of Khanh Hoa Irrigation Works Exploitation Co., Ltd. - said that previously, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee had a plan to dismantle the saltwater dam of the Cai Nha Trang River on the South bank of Tay Nha Trang ward and the North bank of Bac Nha Trang ward.
In recent days, the weather in Nha Trang area has seen prolonged rain, water on the Cai River has risen, making the dismantling of the project difficult.
Meanwhile, the deadline for Khanh Hoa provincial leaders to complete the dismantling is September 30.
Before this request, Khanh Hoa Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Limited Liability Company said that it will mobilize maximum forces, organize day and night construction to complete the dismantling as soon as possible.
The goal of dismantling the existing saltwater dam at Vinh Phuong bridge is to restore the flood drainage capacity of the Cai Nha Trang River in the bridge area, connect waterway traffic and be consistent with the orientation of tourism space development on the Cai Nha Trang river route.
This saltwater prevention dam project was built a long time ago and is reinforced with stone cages, boulders and roof reinforcement concrete panels. The project does not have flood drainage control valves.
The main function of the dam is to prevent saltwater intrusion and maintain fresh water sources to serve the people of Nha Trang and surrounding areas.
However, due to the lack of regulating valves, the flood drainage capacity of the project is limited, and it also affects waterway traffic and activities on the Cai River.
In the historic flood of 2025, when the amount of water from upstream poured in was large, the saltwater dam was said to have become a water barrier, increasing the pressure to drain floodwaters downstream.
After the temporary Xuan Phong saltwater dam at the foot of Vinh Phuong bridge was completed and put into operation, the above-mentioned saltwater dam project is no longer necessary.
The dismantling is aimed at clearing the flow, increasing flood drainage capacity on the Cai River, and limiting water surges and stagnation when there are large floods. Dismantling a scope of 112m long
According to the plan, the demolition scope is 112m long, calculated from the heartbeat to each side 56m, to an altitude of -1.00m.
For the stone dam body adjacent to both banks, the dismantling is carried out according to the slope coefficient m = 2 to ensure stability and suitability to the riverbank terrain. The length of the dismantling range is about 25m according to the flow direction.
To ensure flood drainage and smooth flow through the bridge, the center of the dismantling area is arranged perpendicular to the bridge center.
The shore protection reinforcement part is kept in its original state, without dismantling the reinforcement parts on both sides of the shore.
Keeping these items is to ensure stable embankments, limit the risk of landslides and protect the areas on both sides of the river after dismantling the dam.
