Since Long Bien Bridge temporarily stopped traffic in both directions for pedestrians, motorbikes and rudimentary vehicles to serve repair work, Chuong Duong Bridge has become a nearly optimal choice for many people when crossing the Red River.
The sudden increase in traffic volume causes the Chuong Duong bridge area and both ends of the bridge to frequently fall into congestion, especially during peak hours in the morning and afternoon.
Currently, going to work every day is very hard, affecting both work and spirit. In the immediate future, we hope that the repair of Long Bien bridge will be completed on schedule. In the long term, new bridge projects such as Tran Hung Dao bridge also need to be accelerated to reduce traffic pressure between the two sides of the river" - Mr. Nguyen Hong Quang (Long Bien, Hanoi) shared.
From March 28, Hanoi implemented a ban on motorbikes and pedestrians passing through Long Bien bridge to serve the construction and emergency repair of the pedestrian, motorbike and rudimentary vehicle lane.
After nearly a month of implementation, the appearance of the over 120-year-old bridge has changed significantly. Items such as dismantling the old bridge deck, reinforcing the foundation structure, new asphalt paving, repairing railings, bridge railings and the drainage system of the road section are being synchronously constructed.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong - Deputy Director of Ha Hai Railway Joint Stock Company (the project management and construction unit), so far the workload has been completed by about 70%, and the entire item is expected to be completed on schedule on May 27, 2026.
Mr. Phuong said that the construction process encountered many difficulties, the biggest of which was the cramped construction site.
Large vehicles and machinery cannot directly access the construction area, so they have to be divided into many small sections for deployment. Throughout the construction period, trains still traveled normally across the bridge, so all items must ensure that they do not affect the operation of the railway line.
Right during the April 30 - May 1 holiday, we still maintain 4 construction teams, organizing continuous work in 3 shifts to ensure progress" - Mr. Phuong shared.
Long Bien Bridge is considered a special project as it is not only a traffic infrastructure but also a historical and cultural symbol of the Capital. After more than 120 years of existence, the bridge has deteriorated but still carries great historical value.
Representatives of Ha Hai Railway Joint Stock Company said that during the repair process, the unit also faced great pressure related to preserving the original value of the bridge as well as public concern. However, the unit still maintained the initial construction plan thanks to proactively handling arising problems.
