On July 18, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Xuan Sang led a working delegation to survey and work with the People's Committee of An Giang province and the People's Committee of Phu Quoc special zone on the planning of seaports in Phu Quoc special zone.
Currently, Phu Quoc Special Zone has about 321 investment projects in effect in the planning areas, of which 268 projects are under construction and will be under construction; the demand for construction materials is about 7.5 million tons/year; the number of visitors to Phu Quoc by sea is about 6,000 per day on average, in addition, there is a large number of cars transported back and forth at temporary wharves.
The provincial Department of Construction also said that Kien Giang Seaport belongs to the group of ports with license plate 5. In Phu Quoc, there is a plan to have Phu Quoc wharf area, with the function of serving the socio-economic development of Phu Quoc; have an international passenger wharf combined with general goods. The size of international passenger ships is up to 225,000GT, general ships up to 30,000 tons. The ports of An Thoi, Dam Bay, Bai Vong, Mui Dat Do have general wharves, liquid/air cargo, passenger wharves, sea ferries, and yacht wharves; the ships have a capacity of up to 3,000 tons.
For the investment project to build Phu Quoc International Passenger Port, the total investment is more than 1,644.7 billion VND. The Department of Construction Investment Management of the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) has inspected the completion of the project; completed the work of approving the design for fire prevention and fighting, completed dredging the channel and turning point of the ship to achieve the design depth, installed the signal buoy system.
Regarding An Thoi port, on January 23, 2025, the Vietnam Maritime Administration handed over the assets of the maritime infrastructure of An Thoi seaport to the Department of Construction of An Giang province for receipt and management of exploitation. Currently, the assets of the An Thoi port's maritime infrastructure have degraded due to many years of disuse, no pontoon bays and the unit organizing the exploitation. The Department of Construction is studying and advising the Provincial People's Committee on the project to manage and exploit the An Thoi - Phu Quoc seaport according to regulations.
As for the port of Dam Bay, the Department of Transport (now the Department of Construction) announced a passenger and construction material cargo terminal with a length of 500m (including 5 wharves capable of receiving 1,500 DWT ships; 2 passenger wharves receiving 300-passenger high-speed ships and 1 ferry wharf receiving 300-passenger ships). The capacity to unload goods is from 1-1,5 million tons/year; there is a 10,000m2 cargo warehouse and a 250,000m2 cargo storage area.
Mui Dat Do Wharf has a general wharf, liquid/ air cargo wharf, passenger wharf, sea ferry, and yacht wharf; the size of the ship is up to 3,000 tons. Currently, this area has been planned to build works to serve APEC.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Xuan Sang suggested that the Kien Giang provincial government and Phu Quoc special zone urgently develop a plan to effectively exploit An Thoi international passenger port - a key transport infrastructure project that has been handed over by the ministry.
Regarding the work of ensuring maritime security, preventing and fighting fires and explosions... in the port area, the Deputy Minister also suggested that functional agencies need to review and rectify port exploitation activities, ensuring safety and security for vehicles and passengers.
According to Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ngo Cong Thuc, the province will focus on strengthening security forces for Phu Quoc City, including port areas. Requesting Phu Quoc City to continue to increase propaganda and raise people's awareness of ensuring maritime safety, especially at ports serving tourism and passenger transport.
