On September 22, Huong Hiep Commune People's Committee, Quang Tri province confirmed that the locality is temporarily detaining and caring for a 2.5kg macaque individual voluntarily handed over by people.
Previously, on September 20, Mr. Ho Van Sy (resident of A Rong village, Huong Hiep commune) discovered a monkey individual appearing in his garden.
The monkey individual walked around the garden area, destroying trees and some belongings. Because the animal showed signs of ferocity and could attack people, Mr. Sy tried to arrest it to avoid causing danger to his family and surrounding people.
After catching it, Mr. Sy proactively reported and handed over the monkey to the Huong Hiep Commune People's Committee and forest rangers for care and releasing the animal back to its natural environment.
Through inspection, functional forces determined that this was a macaque (Macaca assamensis), weighing about 6.5kg, belonging to group IIB - endangered, precious, and rare forest animals.
Currently, the monkey is being temporarily detained and cared for at the Economic Department of Huong Hiep commune.
On September 21, Huong Hiep Commune People's Committee issued a notice identifying the owner of forest animals. The government requested individuals and organizations that are legal owners of monkey individuals to contact the Huong Hiep Commune Economic Department for settlement.
Within 5 days from the date of notification, if no owner comes to claim, Huong Hiep Commune People's Committee will handle the monkey according to the provisions of law.
