Regarding the prolonged environmental pollution in Thoi Nhut 2 residential area (Tan An ward, Can Tho city) caused by the garbage dump at the end of the residential area, leaders of functional sectors of Can Tho city informed about the handling direction at the quarterly press conference in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Mr. Ngo Thai Chan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho city said that currently, the domestic waste treatment capacity of Can Tho city basically meets the requirements, and is even rated better than some localities in the region such as Ca Mau, Vinh Long. The city currently has two waste incineration plants that generate electricity, ensuring treatment capacity.
However, according to Mr. Ngo Thai Chan, the biggest bottleneck currently lies in the waste collection and transportation stage. The reason stems from the fact that for many years, Can Tho city's planning has not arranged a suitable waste transfer station.
According to the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho city, the Department is very sympathetic to the frustration of people in Thoi Nhut 2 area. Through surveys, the city has planned to build a new garbage collection station in Long Tuyen ward. It is expected that in the first quarter of 2026, this station will be completed, with a treatment capacity of about 100 tons/day. When Long Tuyen station goes into operation, Thoi Nhut 2 garbage transfer station will be relocated here.

Mr. Nguyen Thai Bao - Vice Chairman of Tan An Ward People's Committee (Can Tho City) said that from January 1, 2026, waste from An Binh ward will be treated in An Binh ward; waste from Ninh Kieu ward will be transported directly by sealed truck to the treatment plant, not transferred through Thoi Nhut 2 to reduce pressure on this residential area.
In addition, Tan An ward will deploy the identification of waste collection vehicles licensed to operate in the area. Waste collection and transport vehicles must ensure that garbage and leachate are not scattered into the environment; the ward police will strengthen inspection and strictly handle violations.
In the long term, Can Tho city allows Tan An ward to order garbage collection services from January 1 to March 31, 2026 to complete bidding procedures. It is expected that from April 1, 2026, the ward will organize a garbage collection bidding for a period of 3 years with stricter criteria, in which it is required that the collection vehicle must have a closed lid, have a device to collect leachate and transport it directly to the treatment plant.
