Regarding the environmental pollution situation in Thoi Nhut 2 residential area (Tan An ward, Can Tho city) caused by the garbage dump at the end of the residential area and lasting for many years that Lao Dong Newspaper has reported, recently, local authorities and garbage collection units have taken clear actions to reduce odors, and at the same time rectify the situation of illegal and rampant dumping of waste in the area.
According to records, the garbage transfer point area has been organized for collection and cleaning, many spontaneous landfills have been treated, contributing to significantly improving the living environment for surrounding people.
Rectifying transshipment activities, requesting thorough handling within 7 days
Informing Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Thai Bao - Vice Chairman of Tan An Ward People's Committee - said that Thoi Nhut 2 area was previously a garbage transfer point serving the old Ninh Kieu district. After people reflected on the environmental pollution situation, the Ward People's Committee coordinated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and related units to organize inspections and comprehensively rectify operations here.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thai Bao, since Tan An ward was established (July 1, 2025), the locality has continuously proposed to functional agencies to request the garbage collection unit not to let garbage accumulate and be congested. The inspection to hand over the garbage transfer point to the locality for management from January 1, 2026 according to the policy of Can Tho City.
Through actual inspection, the amount of waste residue has basically been transported. However, there is still garbage spillage, mud and leachate residue on the road surface; many road sections are damaged but have not been repaired. Notably, some garbage collectors are still covering, sorting scrap and temporarily living right at the transshipment point, causing unsightliness and potential risk of environmental pollution.

Faced with this situation, Tan An Ward People's Committee has requested the garbage collection unit to clear the entire area, organize general cleaning within 7 days, ensuring cleanliness and ventilation. For garbage dumps illegally dumped by people, the ward assigned the Economic - Urban Infrastructure Department to organize collection, and at the same time plant trees around to reduce odors and improve the environment.
Trash diversion, repairing degraded roads
Regarding the degraded access road to the garbage transfer point, Tan An Ward People's Committee has proposed that the Department of Natural Resources and Environment soon clarify the responsibility for repairs according to the contract signed with the garbage collection unit. In case it is not the responsibility of the enterprise, the ward will allocate a budget to repair, striving to complete it before February 7, 2026 (ie, December 20th of the lunar calendar), to serve people traveling before Tet.
Regarding waste diversion, Mr. Nguyen Thai Bao said that from January 1, 2026, waste from An Binh ward will be treated in An Binh ward; waste from Ninh Kieu ward will be transported directly by sealed truck to the treatment plant, without transshipment through Thoi Nhut 2 to reduce pressure on this residential area.

In addition, Tan An ward will deploy the identification of waste collection vehicles licensed to operate in the area. Waste collection and transport vehicles must ensure that garbage and leachate are not scattered into the environment; the ward police will strengthen inspection and strictly handle violations.
In the long term, Can Tho City allows Tan An ward to order garbage collection services from January 1st to March 31st, 2026 to complete bidding procedures. It is expected that from April 1st, 2026, the ward will organize a garbage collection bidding for a period of 3 years with stricter criteria, in which it is required that the collection vehicle must have a closed lid, have a device to collect leachate and transport it directly to the treatment plant.

According to reporters' records, local people assess that the area's environment has changed. Mr. Pham Nhut Thanh (resident of Thoi Nhut 2 residential area) said that about 90% of spontaneous landfills have been collected and treated. However, the smell of garbage still persists and the degraded road has not been restored.
People hope that the government will continue to have more effective solutions to reduce odors and soon repair the road to ensure living and travel," Mr. Thanh shared.
