On July 7, information from the People's Committee of Lao Cai province said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued Decision No. 743 on classifying Lao Cai province as a type I provincial-level administrative unit.
According to current regulations, the classification of provincial-level administrative units is carried out on a 100-point scale, based on 4 groups of criteria including population size, natural area, socio-economic development level and specific factors. Provincial-level administrative units are ranked type I when they reach 75 points or higher.
The recognition as a type I provincial-level administrative unit recognizes the development results of Lao Cai, and at the same time creates a basis for the locality to continue to improve the organizational structure, arrange staff, and implement regimes and policies for the contingent of cadres, civil servants, and public employees in accordance with the scale and development requirements in the new period.

After the merger, Lao Cai province has an area of more than 13,200 km2, a population of nearly 1.8 million people, opening up a vast development space.
The locality has the advantage of being a trade gateway with China on the Kunming - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh Economic Corridor, along with an increasingly complete transport infrastructure system.
In addition, Lao Cai also has a lot of potential to develop border gate trade, logistics, tourism, agriculture - forestry, processing industry and energy. This is considered a foundation for the locality to improve competitiveness, attract investment and promote sustainable socio-economic development in the coming time.
