Recalling the horrifying moment, Ms. Hoang Ly (in Ban Ben village, Viet Hong commune) said that at around 4:00 p.m. on September 29, water from Khe Gao stream in front of her house started to rise. Less than an hour later, the water overflowed to the second floor, where she and her two children were taking shelter.
Ms. Ly only had time to call her sister-in-law in Yen Bai ward to ask her to post a message for help. After the call, the phone also lost signal.
From the balcony of the second floor, she saw her parents' wooden house and her grocery store several hundred meters away washed away.

Around the house, the floodwaters are flowing strongly, many people are sitting on the roofs waiting for rescue, the sound of prayers for rescue is everywhere. Fortunately, her parents were able to evacuate to a safe place before the flood.
At 8:00 p.m. the same day, when the water receded, Ms. Ly was rescued by the commune police from the second floor window and taken to a safe place.
Seeing the flash flood, Ms. Hoang Thi Hanh (born in 1968, in Ban Van village, Viet Hong commune) exclaimed: "I have never seen such a scene in my whole life".
Ms. Hanh said that her house was on the hillside, so when they saw heavy rain, she and her son, daughter-in-law and three young grandchildren moved to the second floor.

"At first, the floodwaters came, I thought it was small, but at around 5:30 p.m., the floodwaters rose very quickly and at around 6 p.m., the water reached the second floor of my family. My family has 8 people and about 12 other people who have to climb onto the roof to take shelter," Ms. Hanh recalled.
The power was out, the whole family only had Ms. Hanh's phone with a battery. She called her daughter who was about 10 km away for help. At around 9pm, the family followed the wall to the hillside, looking for another house in a higher place to temporarily take shelter.
By 11pm, the water gradually receded, and everyone was provided with bread and drinking water by the rescue team. At this time, the villagers breathed a sigh of relief because they had survived.
