In the first 9 months of 2024, the traffic accident situation in Quang Ninh recorded many complicated developments. There were 408 traffic accidents (up 37.37% over the same period). 177 people died (up 16.45%), 363 people were injured (up 53.16%). Of which, 93 cases were due to self-inflicted accidents.
Mr. Nguyen Thien Vuong - Chief of Office of Traffic Safety Committee (ATGT) of Quang Ninh province, shared: "The number of road vehicles in the province increases by an average of 4.5% annually. Up to now, the whole province has more than 1.1 million vehicles, including 157,900 cars, 928,200 motorbikes and 53,200 electric motorbikes. The number of tourists to Quang Ninh reached 15.6 million, an increase of 20% over the same period, causing great pressure on traffic safety work".
"Some major roads in the area are under pressure to exceed traffic volume. At Bai Chay Bridge, the average daily traffic volume is up to 30,400 vehicles, exceeding the designed traffic volume by 103%. Dai Yen toll station recorded a traffic volume exceeding 22.2%, and provincial road 338 exceeded 43%, causing the risk of traffic accidents to increase," said Mr. Vuong.
According to the Report from the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, the main causes of traffic accidents mainly stem from violations by traffic participants: Driving on the wrong side of the road (accounting for 12.44%), not controlling speed (accounting for 11.69%), changing direction in the wrong direction (accounting for 4.23%), violating alcohol concentration (accounting for 9.2%, an increase of 30.95%) and some other causes.
The routes causing accidents are mainly concentrated on national highways (accounting for 40.8%), inner-city roads (38.06%) and rural roads (13.18%). The areas with the highest accident rates are Ha Long (accounting for 27.6%), Cam Pha (14%), and Dong Trieu (13.6%). The time frame for accidents is commonly from 8pm to midnight, accounting for 39.55% of the total number of cases.
In particular, accidents involving students are also a pressing issue, with 75 accidents in 9 months, killing 19 students and injuring 79 students.
