According to Project Management Board 2 - Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, up to now, the districts have completed land acquisition procedures, reaching 100% (585/585 cases), with the site handover rate reaching 98.3% (575/585 cases) to serve the construction of Metro Line 2.
According to records, over the past few days, at the construction site of Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong), workers and machinery have been working continuously day and night to relocate technical infrastructure. From Tan Binh District to District 1, construction materials, sewer pipes, and construction equipment have been gathered on many sidewalks; many sections have been fenced off with corrugated iron and dug deep to relocate technical infrastructure at 10 station locations.
At stations S10 (Pham Van Bach, Tan Binh district), S8 (Nguyen Hong Dao), S4 (Hoa Hung), S5 (Le Thi Rieng), S6 (Pham Van Hai), construction work is taking place urgently, ensuring progress thanks to the completed site and uncomplicated technical infrastructure.
At the S2 station area (Tao Dan), the construction encountered many difficulties such as the complex technical infrastructure system with many overlapping water supply and drainage pipes, power lines and telecommunications. At the S9 station (Ba Queo), the project encountered difficulties in traffic flow and the water supply system did not match the original design, forcing adjustments, slowing down the construction progress.
According to Mr. Vu Van Vinh, Director of Project Management Board 2 - Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board: "To speed up the progress, the contractor has mobilized machinery and workers to work in 3 shifts, continuously day and night, and at the same time divided the construction teams to promote the project progress. The goal is to complete the main water supply and drainage items of Metro Line 2 by the end of the year.
As for Democracy Station, due to the city's large water supply system, the construction time will be longer and is expected to be completed in mid-2025. The entire technical infrastructure will also be completed in mid-2025, so that at the end of the year, construction of the underground station, tunnel and elevated section can begin.
According to plan, Metro Line 2 will be constructed in 5 years and is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.
Metro Line 2 was approved in 2010, with an initial investment of 1.3 billion USD (26,000 billion VND). By 2019, the total investment had been adjusted to 2.1 billion USD (nearly 47,900 billion VND).
This Metro line is more than 11 km long, of which 9.2 km is underground and the rest is an elevated section leading to Tham Luong depot (District 12). The project includes 9 underground stations and 1 elevated station.
When put into operation, Metro Line 2 will connect with Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) at Ben Thanh Station (District 1), and connect with many other Metro lines in the future. This will help people move conveniently along the East - West axis of Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to reducing traffic congestion in the city center.
