Heavy rain causes local flooding and landslides on two islands of Kien Giang

NGUYÊN ANH |

Prolonged rain caused localized flooding in some areas of Phu Quoc City. In addition, An Son island commune (Kien Hai district) also encountered landslides.

On September 19, the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense of Kien Giang province said that due to the influence of a tropical depression in the East Sea, heavy rain occurred in Kien Giang province, causing some property damage.

From September 16 to September 18, Phu Quoc City experienced prolonged heavy rain, causing localized flooding in some areas. Prolonged heavy rain, combined with rising sea levels, caused localized flooding, affecting 430 households in the area. Authorities assisted in evacuating 75 households to safe shelters.

Heavy rain caused local flooding in some areas of Duong Dong ward, Cua Duong commune, Duong To commune, and Ham Ninh commune.

A fishing boat over 20m long owned by a boat owner residing in Rach Gia City sank while anchored in the sea area about 600m from Hon Thom. The 9 crew members on board were rescued safely.

The Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense of Phu Quoc City urgently directed the People's Committees of communes and wards to mobilize nearly 400 people from the police, military, disaster prevention and control teams... and 6 trucks, 46 motorbikes, life rafts, life jackets and other rescue vehicles to support people in areas affected by local flooding.

Previously, on the evening of September 18, Lieutenant colonel Nguyen Thanh Nhan - Head of Nam Du Border Guard Station (Kien Giang Border Guard) said that the unit had coordinated with the People's Committee of An Son commune, departments, organizations, forces and people in the area, along with vehicles to participate in overcoming the landslide.

Due to bad weather with prolonged thunderstorms and strong winds, many large and small landslides occurred on the roads around An Son island commune, Kien Hai district. There were about 6 large landslides and more than 20 small landslides, with fallen trees and rocks and soil sliding onto the roads... mainly concentrated in An Cu and Bai Ngu hamlets.

When the incident occurred, the locality mobilized more than 40 people and support vehicles to overcome 3 large landslides and more than 10 small landslides, sawed down trees, cleared more than 1km of road, and placed landslide warning signs... to ensure people's safety.

In recent days, the Kien Giang Maritime Port Authority has temporarily suspended the operation of passenger transport boats in the province from the mainland to the islands and vice versa to ensure passenger safety. As of today, September 19, only boats and ferries on the Phu Quoc - Ha Tien (and vice versa) route have resumed operation.

The Irrigation Branch has proactively increased the opening of sluice gates in the province and coordinated with the Southern Irrigation Exploitation Company Limited to operate and open all sluice gates of Cai Lon, Cai Be, and Xeo Ro to drain water and prevent flooding in low-lying areas.
