Border guards work overnight to help people in flooded areas in Phu Quoc

NGUYÊN ANH |

More than 100 Border Guard officers and soldiers stationed in Phu Quoc City actively helped people overcome damage caused by localized flooding caused by thunderstorms.

In recent days, bad weather has caused prolonged thunderstorms and strong winds in Phu Quoc City. In some low-lying areas, residential areas along rivers, streams, and between ravines, there have been localized flooding, with water levels rising about 1 meter in many places.

Faced with the above situation, the Kien Giang Provincial Border Guard Command has directed Border Guard units on the island to mobilize maximum human resources, vehicles, and equipment, with the motto of "4 on-the-spot" to move to flooded areas to help people overcome the consequences.

Border guards worked all night to take elderly people, children, and women out of flooded areas and transport valuable items and household appliances to dry areas.

The forces tied down houses, fixed tables, chairs, cabinets, beds, etc. together to avoid being swept away by the water. Many officers and soldiers went to flooded roads to help people move their stalled vehicles to safety and take children to school.

In addition, the Border Guard also coordinates with local forces along coastal residential areas to guide people to anchor and tie boats, fish cages securely, to guard against storms or big waves and strong winds.

The Kien Giang Provincial Border Guard Command also said that the Border Guard force is still taking turns on duty, ready to help people when situations arise.

Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa also said that the locality has sent forces and officials to areas partially flooded by heavy rain to help people move their belongings and people to safety. The authorities have sent excavators to quickly clear some bottlenecks. In the near future, specialized departments will coordinate with communes and wards to conduct thorough surveys to invest in upgrading or repairing drainage systems and roads according to their capabilities.

According to the Hydrometeorological Station of Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc city continues to have moderate to heavy rain, some places have very heavy rain with common rainfall from 30-50mm, some places over 60mm. The flooded areas are the inner-city roads of Duong Dong ward; Cay Thong Trong, Cay Thong Ngoai, Ben Tram, Suoi Cat hamlets (Cua Duong commune) and some places in Cua Can commune... The inner-city roads of Duong Dong ward are flooded during the period of heavy rain and drained after the rain ended about 3-4 hours.
