On the afternoon of September 22, heavy rain appeared in many areas of Ho Chi Minh City, causing some roads such as National Highway 1K, Nguyen Duy Trinh, Hiep Binh, Quoc Huong, Kha Van Can... to quickly be locally flooded.
In the central areas of the city, heavy rain appeared on a large scale, at times pouring down quickly, making it difficult for vehicles to move.
According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, through monitoring satellite cloud images, weather radar and lightning positioning, convective clouds are developing strongly, causing showers with thunderstorms and lightning in many areas of Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring areas.
In the next 3 hours, convective clouds will continue to develop, causing showers and thunderstorms in many wards and communes. Common rainfall is 8-40 mm, with some places over 50 mm.
The meteorological agency warns that during thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind at level 5-7 (8-17 m/s). Heavy rain may cause localized flooding in low-lying areas, especially on urban roads.
The current situation causing thunderstorms is a tropical convergence zone with its axis through the South Central and Southern regions operating strongly, while the Southwest monsoon has a weak to moderate intensity. The convergence zone at sea tends to move towards the mainland of the Southern region, creating conditions to maintain thunderstorms.
It is forecast that the rain area may continue to expand to neighboring areas in the coming hours.
