National Highway 62 is becoming a nightmare for many people who regularly travel through this route. After heavy rains, a series of potholes and craters appeared in the road surface, in some places deep to the point of water covering them, making it difficult for pedestrians to recognize and avoid.
On the morning of September 23, widespread heavy rain in Tay Ninh province caused many roads to be flooded, making travel difficult. On National Highway 62, the damage to the road surface is clear with many potholes and craters. Some traffic accidents also occurred on this route.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Bao, a long-time truck driver in Binh Hiep commune, who regularly travels on National Highway 62, said that on the morning of September 23, he sometimes felt like he was "driving a tractor on rice fields in Dong Thap Muoi area".
According to Mr. Bao, every rainy season, potholes and craters on National Highway 62 become more dangerous. The most worrying thing is students when water from the road surface splashes on them. Along with that is the risk of unfortunate accidents.
This situation is not new. Recently, continuous rains have caused the road surface to continue to degrade. Previously, bridge and road repair workers had repaired, but after repairing one place, damage appeared elsewhere. Many newly repaired locations continue to degrade.
In hamlet 5, My An commune, many deep holes appear right in the middle of the road. On rainy days, water covers these holes, turning them into "ponds" located in the middle of the road, posing a risk of accidents for traffic participants.
Meanwhile, the volume of vehicles circulating on National Highway 62 is very large. Every day, many trucks and container trucks carrying goods continuously pass through, causing the already degraded road surface to continue to bear more pressure.
Speaking of National Highway 62, not only people living here but anyone passing through this road must worry. During the day, they can still see and remember which part has potholes to avoid, but at night they lose," said Ms. Do Thi Kieu Oanh, a resident of My An commune.
According to Ms. Oanh, people have heard information about upgrading and expanding the road many times but still have to wait.
This waiting is facing a new milestone when the project to upgrade and renovate National Highway 62 has been approved. In June 2025, the Prime Minister approved the policy of investing in 3 National Highways 53, 62 and 91B connecting the region, adapting to climate change in the Mekong Delta region, using World Bank loans. By February 2026, the Ministry of Construction approved the project, including the component project to upgrade and renovate National Highway 62 and assigned the Vietnam Road Administration to be the investor.
The project has a total investment of more than 3,200 billion VND, a length of about 69km, from the intersection of the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway to Binh Hiep international border gate, passing through 8 communes and wards of Tay Ninh province.
Notably, the project will build a new bypass route to the center of Tan Thanh commune, about 8km long, according to the standard of a level III delta road. The route has a roadbed width of 12m, a road surface of 11m, including 2 lanes for motorized vehicles and 2 lanes for rudimentary vehicles, with a design speed of 80km/h. The cost of site clearance, compensation and resettlement support is about 1,000 billion VND. The negotiation and completion of the World Bank loan agreement has been basically completed.
At a working session with the Standing Committee of Tay Ninh Provincial Party Committee on July 6, 2026, Politburo Member, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc requested relevant units to accelerate the progress of completing procedures, ensuring the commencement of National Highway 62 in the fourth quarter of 2026.
After potholes, craters and "ponds" appearing in the middle of the road every rainy season, National Highway 62 is waiting for a change that has been set by a project worth more than 3,200 billion VND.
National Highway 62 has a length of 69 km, after 25 years of use, the road has seriously deteriorated, the road surface is narrow and no longer ensures increasing traffic volume. This is a vital traffic route from the administrative center of Tay Ninh province to Dong Thap Muoi communes and the Cambodian border.
The road also plays a connecting role with National Highway 1, National Highway N2 and the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway. At the same time, it plays an important role in transporting goods across borders, developing logistics, border gate trade and regional linkages.
