According to the People's Committee of Long Dien commune, Ca Mau province, on February 26 and 27, 2026, consecutive unseasonal rains caused great damage to salt area and production in the area.
Vice Chairman of Long Dien Commune People's Committee Le Van Thang said that the total area of salt damaged is 452.27ha with 403 households. The amount of salt dissolved and lost under the crystallized field is estimated at 1,356.81 tons, an average of about 3 tons/ha. The total value of damage is estimated at more than 1.356 billion VND.

Faced with the above situation, Long Dien Commune People's Committee has sent a report to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ca Mau province (through the Sub-Department of Cooperative Economics and Rural Development) to summarize and consider supporting salt farmers who have suffered damage according to regulations. Local authorities believe that unseasonal rain occurred right at the peak time of salt crystallization, causing the entire amount of salt being dried to dissolve, directly affecting people's income.
Damage from unseasonal rains not only occurred in Long Dien but also recorded in other salt production areas.
Head of the Economic Department of Dong Hai commune Chau Minh Thuong said that the entire 775.7ha salt production area with 323 participating households was damaged, accounting for 100% of the production area. The amount of salt dissolved and lost is estimated at about 7,757 tons. With an average salt price of about 1.2 million VND per ton, the total value of damage is estimated at more than 9.3 billion VND.

According to the assessment of functional sectors, this year's unseasonal rain diễn biến bất thường, not according to the usual weather rules, causing very high risks for salt production - an area that completely depends on prolonged hot weather conditions. In addition to production damage, salt farmers also have to incur additional costs for pumping water, renovating crystallization yards and facing the risk of delayed production seasons.
Besides the damage in salt production, unseasonal rain also causes localized flooding in some urban areas. People reflect that the flooding situation stems from unsynchronized infrastructure construction, especially on Tran Phu street when the road surface is raised but the drainage system and sidewalks are not completed. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung said that heavy rain caused water to not drain in time and flood into people's houses because the house foundation is lower than the road surface.
Faced with the above damages, localities proposed to soon consider supporting salt farmers in accordance with regulations, and at the same time review and overcome infrastructure inadequacies to limit flooding and minimize risks due to extreme weather in the coming time.
