Dredging rivers and streams in the Ba River area in Gia Lai to drain floodwater

THANH TUẤN |

Gia Lai - Commune People's Committees are primarily responsible for implementing the dredging and drainage project to drain floodwater.

The commune is still slow to implement the project

Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee requests the authorities of Ia Sao and Ia Rbol communes to accelerate the progress of the dredging and clearing project of Ia Rto stream and Bo river stream.

In the annual rainy and flood season, the Ba River floodwater flows in, causing the water level on these two streams to rise, causing flooding in residential areas, affecting people's lives and production land areas.

To respond to the approaching rainy and flood season, the province directed the two communes to soon accelerate the dredging and drainage project.

However, the People's Committees of Ia Rbol and Ia Sao communes are still slow in implementation, not seriously implementing fully the requirements and milestones that have been directed by the Provincial People's Committee.

Commune People's Committees are still confused, lack proactiveness, and have a mentality of waiting and asking for opinions on tasks under their authority, prolonging the implementation time.

Dredging project helps mitigate the impact of natural disasters and floods

Mr. Duong Mah Tiep - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - requested the two communes to complete the necessary dossiers and procedures to deploy dredging within the scope, volume, elevation, ensuring safety and environment according to the plan that has been appraised by the Department of Agriculture and Environment.

The head of the Commune People's Committee must directly direct, not shirk responsibility, transfer responsibility to departments and branches, prolonging the dredging project progress.

Over the past time, Gia Lai has strengthened clearing and dredging of lakes, dams, rivers, and streams to strengthen flood drainage corridors, reducing damage caused by floods. Especially in large rivers such as Ha Thanh River, the Ba River area and lakes and dams such as Ayun Ha Lake.

Scenarios for flood response, logistics, rescue, relief, relocation, resettlement have been carefully prepared. During the historic flood in 2025, the whole province had many residential areas deeply flooded; more than 57,000 houses were flooded; 28,196 houses were collapsed, fallen, swept away or heavily damaged, requiring urgent construction and repair.

Total estimated damage is more than 11,500 billion VND, of which storm No. 13 caused damage of more than 10,000 billion VND, and the flood caused damage of about 1,500 billion VND.
