In 2024, the Party Committee and the government of Ha Tinh City (old) began implementing the idea of building an artificial bird garden to preserve birds, develop eco-tourism and create an experience space for people and tourists.
Through a survey of many suburban locations, the Dong River area (old Thach Linh ward) was selected thanks to its river ecosystem, muddy lagoons and suitable wild vegetation.
According to local people, during the annual storm season, many migratory birds such as storks, herons, hives, and geese often fly here to avoid the wind but quickly leave due to environmental conditions that do not meet long-term living needs.
To overcome this limitation, the old Ha Tinh City government invited Mr. Le Danh Cuong - an expert from Ca Mau with a lot of experience in building a bird garden - to support technical consultation.
Mr. Cuong said that because the area has no natural forests, it is necessary to prioritize creating a suitable environment by planting trees such as Sanh, coconut, dung co, bamboo, sung vang, cajuput along with many native plant varieties to form bird islands and attraction areas.
After that, local authorities, businesses and people actively participated, contributing working days, seedlings and machinery to dig lakes and build banks. Tens of thousands of trees were planted, lakes and bird islands were completed, creating an ideal home environment for water birds.
Since the beginning of 2025, hundreds of birds such as storks, Moors, geese, parrots, and some rare species such as sky ducks, lion turkeys, and water-drawn chickens have come to live, adapting well to the ecosystem along the East River.
Mr. Hoang Van Nam (53 years old), the bird garden caretaker, shared: I am very happy to see the pristine land now become a safe haven for hundreds of birds.
According to Mr. Nam, every morning, hearing the quail singing, watching them fly in the middle of the lake, and following the trees makes him and many local people very happy.
"Hopefully the bird garden will soon become an attractive destination for nature lovers and ecotourism experiences," Mr. Nam added.
