On September 8, Mr. Nguyen Hong Tai - Chairman of the People's Committee of Tuong Duong Commune (Nghe An) - said that due to the risk of serious landslides in the hill area opposite Khe Ngoa suspension bridge, in Lo village, Tuong Duong commune, the local government has urgently implemented a plan to relocate households living and doing business at the foot of the hill to a safe place.
According to local residents, on September 6, a crack dozens of meters long appeared on the back of the hill, located on the positive slope, about 50m from National Highway 7.
By September 7, the crack had dipped about 1m deeper, and had expanded to a width and length of more than 60m, forming a landslide with the risk of collapsing onto National Highway 7, directly threatening households below as well as vehicles traveling through the area.
The People's Committee of Tuong Duong commune has coordinated with the Lo Village Management Board to conduct field inspections, assess the level of danger and develop response plans.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Tai - Chairman of Tuong Duong Commune People's Committee - said that the local government has put up warning signs, put up barriers to protect dangerous areas and urgently brought households doing business at the foot of the hill out of the area at risk of landslides; reported to superiors and road management units for coordination in handling.
National Highway 7 is a vital traffic route connecting National Highway 1A with Nam Can International Border Gate (Nghe An), running through complex mountainous terrain, with high mountains on one side and large rivers such as Lam River and Nam Mo River on the other.
During the rainy and stormy season, this area often experiences landslides, causing traffic disruption and threatening the safety of residential areas along the route. Not only in Lo village, people in Cua Rao 2 village (Tuong Duong commune) also recorded a similar situation when cracks appeared behind many houses.
Faced with the risk of landslides, people recommend that local authorities promptly inspect vulnerable points along the positive slope of National Highway 7 to promptly detect, handle, and ensure safety for the community.
Tuong Duong commune authorities and functional forces are continuing to closely monitor geological developments, ready to deploy response plans to minimize damage if landslides occur.
