Pollution is getting worse
Binh Yen craft village (in Nam Thanh commune, Nam Truc district, Nam Dinh province) is a traditional craft village that has existed for a long time, specializing in recycling and aluminum smelting.
According to local residents, recycling and aluminum casting not only pollutes the air but also "dystify" the canal and ditch system in the area.

According to Lao Dong Newspaper, in Binh Yen village, with the naked eye, it is possible to see sections of canals and ditches with thick branches, turning black, blue, with a foul smell on the surface. The air around the village was suffocated by smoke from the chimney and slag from the incinerator.
This craft village currently has nearly 300/600 households producing, recycled materials are beer cans and scrap aluminum. Every day, Binh Yen craft village discharges into the environment about 500 - 700m3 of wastewater mixed with chemicals, more than 3 tons of coal slag (solid).
Wastewater treatment plant is covered
Faced with pollution in Binh Yen craft village, in 2014, the wastewater treatment plant project for this craft village was completed. The project has a total cost of nearly 90 billion VND, invested by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Dinh province.

"In 2014, the wastewater treatment plant was completed, but it was only put into trial operation and has not yet been officially put into operation. After that, many years passed, and we did not see this area operate; by 2019, it was handed over to Nam Thanh commune for us to manage, but not operate", Mr. Dao Xuan Tien - Vice Chairman of Nam Thanh Commune People's Committee informed.
In 2021, to overcome the shortcomings of the above wastewater treatment plant, the People's Committee of Nam Truc district built a settling lake behind to collect all wastewater into the lake.
Although additional items have been built, up to now, the wastewater treatment plant in Binh Yen craft village is still in a state of "shelving". Machinery and equipment have been damaged and rusted.

The Vice Chairman of Nam Thanh Commune People's Committee added that the wastewater supply system from households producing wastewater to the station area is unreasonable, so the treatment station is very difficult to put into operation.
To minimize pollution, the local government has repeatedly dredged the canal and ditch system, but this is only an initial solution. In addition, from 2017 to present, solid waste (lychee) from households has been collected at the concentrated point for transportation to Bac Ninh, treated using high technology. The cost of solid waste treatment is paid by households, at the rate of 300,000 VND/ton of scrap. The locality hopes that all levels and sectors will pay attention and promptly fix the problem so that the wastewater treatment plant can be put into operation.
