According to the survey results of projects to relocate residents in areas at risk of landslides, flash floods, and flash floods in the period of 2021-2025 approved by Quang Ngai province, there are over 1,800 households with more than 7,300 people living in 5 mountainous districts at risk of landslides, flash floods, and flash floods, threatening people's lives and property. Quang Ngai aims to invest in 35 resettlement areas in mountainous areas for about 1,000 households by 2025, relocate nearly 300 households, and stabilize 559 households in areas at risk of landslides and flash floods.
Son Tay mountainous district is one of the localities where landslides frequently occur during the rainy and stormy season. According to the People's Committee of Son Tay district, the whole district has 6 landslide risk points at level 1 with 53 households/189 people (interspersed relocation plan); 32 landslide risk points at level 2 with 233 households/896 people (interspersed and concentrated relocation plan) and 2 landslide risk points at level 3 with 28 households/105 people (interspersed and concentrated relocation plan).
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Cao Van Chung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Bua Commune, Son Tay District said: "Currently, the mountains around the residential area of Nuoc Toa, Mang Ta Be village, are at high risk of landslides in the locality during this year's flood season. These mountains are 300-500m high and landslides have occurred in 2019 and 2006".
According to Mr. Chung, this area has about 58 households, of which 25 are at the highest risk. Every time there is information about storms, the locality evacuates households to safe areas such as schools and commune People's Committees. However, in the long term, there needs to be a plan to build embankments and resettle people to ensure the safety of life and property during the storm season.
Mr. Dinh Truong Giang, Vice Chairman of Son Tay District People's Committee, said: "After storm No. 3, on September 9, the district organized a summary of natural disaster prevention - search and rescue, in which, it emphasized re-examining all landslide points that had been previously listed strictly according to the plan of the district inspecting the commune, the commune inspecting the village, reviewing old landslide points, new risk points and suspected landslide risk points. Assigning forces to be on duty, implementing well the '4 on-site' motto, especially stockpiling food and necessities, choosing locations such as schools with boarding houses, solid houses to carry out evacuation and interleaving".
Drawing on experience from the response to storm No. 3 and the recent rain and flood in the northern provinces, in mid-September 2024, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Giang - Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province requested localities to review and make full and specific statistics of each location at high risk of landslides, flash floods and geological faults in the area... to proactively respond when rain and floods occur.
