In the early days of August, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters were present in Van Hoa commune, Lao Cai city (Lao Cai province), along the banks of the Red River, next to Giang Dong bridge, many areas had serious landslides.
Actual records show that, on the road towards the center of Lao Cai city (Vo Nguyen Giap street), the foot of the embankment has eroded. In particular, some points are only a few meters from the road surface.
Visible to the naked eye, many large and small cracks and subsidences have appeared in the riverbank area; Trees, rocks and soil are tilted... there is a potential risk of further landslides when floods occur.
Previously, at the end of July, Lao Cai Hydrological Station measured the flood level at 80.13m, exceeding the alert level I of 0.13m, with a flood amplitude of 2.75m. The flood water was turbid and fast flowing, carrying a lot of firewood and trash floating on the river surface.
Rising flood waters have caused inundation, damaging many planted areas and crops along both sides of the river.
Although the river bank erosion has not directly threatened the property or lives of households around the area, it has also raised many concerns about the risk of the Red River continuing to "swallow land" in the upcoming rainy and flood season.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha (Lao Cai City) said: "I go here every day to work, and seeing river bank erosion like that is very worrying. If the flood water continues to rise, landslides will soon occur on Vo Nguyen Giap street."
Mr. Hoang Van Toan (Van Hoa commune, Lao Cai city) also shared: "This landslide on the banks of the Red River took place during recent rainy and flood days. In some areas, soil was dumped next to flooded river banks and was swept away by the water."
According to Mr. Toan, Lao Cai province is currently investing a lot in embankments to limit landslides. Therefore, people hope these projects will soon be completed and reinforce the river banks, especially in the upcoming rainy and flood season.
From those risks, the Red River right bank anti-landslide embankment project with an investment of 620 billion VND and the Red River embankment project, migrants arranged resettlement in the Canh Chin area, Van Hoa commune, City. Lao Cai with a total investment of 733 billion VND has been under construction.
In early 2024, the Red River embankment project (Urban Sub-area No. 15, Lao Cai City, Lao Cai Province) with a length of nearly 1km, with an investment of more than 200 billion VND, was also implemented.
Talking to reporters from Lao Dong Newspaper, the leader of the ODA Project Management Board of Lao Cai province said: "For the Red River embankment project, migrants will arrange resettlement in the Canh Chin area, Van Hoa commune, Lao Cai city with capital. Investment of more than 700 billion VND has been completed. Currently, the unit is making efforts to bring the embankment project worth more than 200 billion VND to its destination on time. Strive to complete it by the end of this year."
According to the leaders of the People's Committee of Lao Cai province, the Red River embankment anti-erosion projects are key irrigation works of the province, of great significance in expanding the scope of urban planning of Lao Cai City.
At the same time, overcome landslides on the banks of the Red River and protect irrigation, transportation and public works along the city's embankment.
