As Lao Dong reported, in recent days, in the Cay Hop melon field, Trung Thanh 1 village, Thanh Long commune (Ham Yen, Tuyen Quang), there has been an unusual phenomenon of tens of thousands of earthworms emerging from the field surface. This incident has caused panic among local people.
On the afternoon of October 6, as soon as receiving the information, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Ham Yen district coordinated with specialized units to inspect and determine the cause.
Upon inspection, the area where worms crawled on the ground was about 5,400 square meters. Initially, the authorities determined that the cause of the phenomenon was due to people using chicken manure to fertilize plants. The process of decomposing chicken manure generates heat, causing the soil to heat up, causing a lack of air in the soil.
Along with that, households use nylon bags to cover the beds with high density, reducing the air in the soil, causing earthworms to have to come up to the surface to breathe.
In addition, the local weather is sunny during the day and the humidity is low, so earthworms come to the surface of the field in large numbers.
Speaking to reporters, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam - Chairman of Thanh Long Commune People's Committee - said that this is the first time such an unusual phenomenon has occurred in the commune.
"The locality is continuing to closely monitor the above phenomenon, and at the same time, disseminate information to prevent people from panicking and affecting security and order," said the commune leader.
