The area at the beginning of alley 14 Nguyen Hong street (Giang Vo ward, Hanoi), which was once a "black spot" of garbage in May 2025, has now been cleaned up. No-dumping signs have been erected, raising people's awareness. Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, who does business near the area, shared that the environment is now clean, no longer smells bad and hopes that people will comply with regulations on dumping garbage on time to maintain the urban landscape.
Not only are there no-dumping signs, at some times PV recorded, this area is also equipped with free drinking water bottles to serve passersby. According to many people, the combination of public utilities with no-dumping signs has contributed to creating positive changes in people's behavior, limiting the situation of littering indiscriminately.
Many waste points in the city, such as the intersection between Linh Lang and Phan Ke Binh streets, have been improved. Ms. Cao Thi Huu, a resident near the area, shared that the environment is now clean, bringing a comfortable feeling. However, the situation of littering improperly still occurs at some times, showing that maintaining the results requires long-term efforts.
In addition to handling improper dumping of garbage by traditional measures such as prohibition signs, many new control solutions have been implemented in Hanoi.
In alley 70, alley 381 Nguyen Khang, which used to be a nightmare for people due to the situation of illegal dumping, there have now been positive changes. This area has now been installed with a surveillance camera system and warning signs strictly prohibiting dumping.
Through records from people in the area, since there is a "magic eye" to monitor, the pollution situation here has decreased significantly. Although there are still a few cases of illegal dumping, basically, the problem of rampant waste has been overcome.
Sharing about this change, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son (Quan Hoa ward, Hanoi) said: "Since the no-entry sign and cameras, the situation has improved a lot even though it has not completely stopped. Previously, garbage was so overflowing that even two people walking into the alley could not avoid each other. The hardest thing is on rainy days, garbage floats. Now, seeing the traffic light warning sign, everyone is scared and more aware.
The City Police being assigned to share AI camera data with departments, branches, and commune and ward People's Committees to promptly extract images and conduct "cold fines" for acts of littering, transporting, and illegally dumping waste in violation of regulations has contributed to improving the effectiveness of monitoring, limiting violations, and improving urban environmental sanitation.
Not only that, thanks to the close monitoring of local authorities through the iHanoi application, many "black spots" of waste have been detected and handled promptly immediately after people reflected, contributing to improving the efficiency of management and maintaining urban environmental sanitation.
Experts believe that to maintain green - clean - beautiful streets, launching a cleanup campaign or erecting no-entry signs is not enough. There needs to be synchronous and drastic involvement from the government, but the most important factor is still people's awareness.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thi An - Director of the Institute of Natural Resources, Environment and Community Development - emphasized that it is necessary to thoroughly handle the situation of accumulated waste on streets. "The environment is a measure of urban civilization. We cannot let the situation of piles of garbage existing at the beginning of the street and the end of the hamlet exist. This needs to be resolved persistently and drastically," Ms. An said.
