The North-South railway line through Binh Thuan province is 177km long. There are many safety risks on this route as there are 176 level crossings between roads and railways; of which 64 are legal. In particular, there are 112 dangerous self-made crossings across the railway.
According to the latest statistics from the beginning of 2024 to present, there have been 5 railway traffic accidents in Binh Thuan province, killing 4 people. The Traffic Safety Committee of Binh Thuan province said that the causes were victims lying on the railway, pedestrians crossing the railway, drivers crossing the railway without paying attention, and railway excavators on the railway.
In addition to the above causes, the railway route through this province also has a situation where local people arbitrarily open a path across the railway, fill up drainage ditches with soil, causing flooding of the railway bed during heavy rains; many vehicles transporting agricultural products pass by, causing damage to the railway infrastructure... changing the technical parameters of the railway, leading to the risk of serious accidents.
Faced with the above risks and accidents that have occurred, the Traffic Safety Committee of Binh Thuan province has requested localities to strengthen coordination in closing fences, eliminating self-opened paths, and handling violations of railway safety corridors. Following this direction, the People's Committee of Tanh Linh has eliminated 2 self-opened paths and fences, and dismantled many self-opened paths across the railway in the area.
At the same time, invest in frontage roads leading to cross-roads at some locations to serve people's travel needs and completely resolve the problem of self-opened walkways in this area.
In Ham Thuan Bac district, on August 30, a railway accident occurred when a train hit a car crossing the railway at km1531 + 085, killing the driver. At this location, there are two self-opened crossings at km1531 + 085 and km1531 + 250. Although the authorities had previously surveyed and proposed to close them, the accident had not yet been implemented.
Faced with the risk of railway accidents at the two self-opened crossings, local residents agreed to close these two self-opened crossings.
On the afternoon of October 4, speaking with reporters, Mr. Dang Thanh Phuc - Chairman of Ham Thuan Bac District People's Committee said that the district has proposed the relevant authorities to close these two self-opened paths.
In the latest proposal sent to the National Traffic Safety Committee at the end of September, the Traffic Safety Committee of Binh Thuan province requested the Ministry of Transport to continue to direct priority and early investment in some level crossing locations. At the same time, the Ministry of Transport directed the Vietnam Railway Corporation to invest in upgrading level crossings with automatic warning signs and installing automatic barriers at the remaining 12 level crossings in the province.
