On October 2, the bomb and mine Advisory Group (MAG) said that the clearing teams had just safely handled 4 large bombs in Quang Tri. These bombs are located close to traffic routes, in fields, posing a potential risk to people's lives.
Previously, on September 21, Mr. Ho Hien - Village Chief of Cha Lo Village (Dan Hoa Commune, Quang Tri Province) - discovered two bombs while fishing. The location where the bomb was discovered was on the bank of a stream, near a traffic road, it is likely that after a heavy rain, the surface layer of rock and soil was swept away by floodwaters, so the bomb was exposed.
Mr. Hien immediately reported to the authorities and Border Guard forces at Cha Lo International Border Gate. On September 24, MAG's emergency bomb and mine handling team approached and determined that these were two M117 bombs, each weighing 334 kg, with a lethality of more than 1,500 m. During the excavation, the team also discovered another bomb of the same type lying under the stream. All three bombs were transported to the safe detention site.
Mr. Ho Hien said that from 2021 to now, 10 large bombs have been discovered in this area. Most of the bombs I discovered were intact and could explode at any time. The good news is that they are handled promptly, so we have less worries" - Mr. Hien shared.
Also on September 24, while clearing a cluster of bombs in Hoan Lao commune (Quang Tri), MAG's technician discovered an unusual signal. After digging 60cm deep, a MK82 bomb weighing 227kg was discovered, lying in a local cassava field, just 40m from the house. Although the detonator was gone, the bomb still contained large amounts of explosives and could explode. The bomb was safely transported out of the residential area that same day.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Phu - Captain of the MAG Blasting and Blasting Team - emphasized that each bomb that is treated is an additional clean land, adding safety to the people.
"We always strictly follow the technical process to handle the detected explosives so that people can feel secure in production and living" - Mr. Phu said.
It is known that MAG is an international humanitarian organization operating in Vietnam since 1999, having safely handled more than 400,000 explosives, clearing over 300 km2 of land in Quang Tri and Da Nang. The organization's activities are supported by the governments of the United States, Japan and Canada, contributing to a safe living environment for the community.
