Houses in Phu Son village, Ham My commune, Ham Thuan Nam district, Binh Thuan province were half flooded on August 28. Now the water has receded, people have returned home and started cleaning up.
Recorded in this area on the morning of August 30, many plywood furniture in flooded houses were broken. Many household electronic devices were damaged.
Looking at his house, Mr. Le Van Phuoc, nearly 70 years old, shook his head and said that it took him all day to clean up. This is the first time the flood was this deep. According to Mr. Phuoc, although he has lived here for decades and witnessed many floods in this location, when the water rises, it overflows the road and recedes after about 2-3 hours. Since the DT 719B road project was started, the water has been stagnant, leading to flooding into people's houses. The water rose so high and so fast that people could not move their belongings out in time.
"I don't know how much flooding will be if the heavy rain continues or the dam is released tomorrow," Mr. Phuoc worriedly shared.
Sharing the same opinion with Mr. Phuoc, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tam - whose house is near the national highway and was also flooded on August 28 - said that the flooding started after the appearance of DT 719B. Because it is not located in a low-lying area like Mr. Phuoc's house, since the morning of August 29, the water receded, and his family quickly cleaned up to return to normal life. However, he is still worried that his house will be flooded again when it rains heavily.
According to observations when standing on DT 719B road, in the above area, the water is still half submerged in the dragon fruit pole. The water is stagnant right at the drainage position of this road.
The 719B road project is more than 25km long, with a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND, and was started in November 2020 and is expected to be completed in June 2023, but is currently stuck at the Nam Suoi Nhum titanium mine.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien - Deputy Director of the Management Board of Investment and Construction of Traffic Works of Binh Thuan Province, the investor of the DT 719B road project, the road has been fully calculated and designed with a drainage system in this area. The aperture of the culverts and bridges is designed to be larger than the existing culverts in the streams.
Therefore, the investor affirmed that the design of the bridge and culvert through this section is reasonable. The recent flooding situation was due to prolonged heavy rain in the area, the water could not drain quickly when the stream near the area was narrow and blocked.
After the flooding occurred, authorities of Binh Thuan province came to inspect the scene and assess the cause. People hope that the authorities will soon have a solution to deal with the flooding so that they can live and work in peace.
According to the report of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Binh Thuan province, this is a type of natural disaster called "Heavy rain causing flooding". On August 27-28, heavy rain occurred in Ham Thuan Nam district, causing flooding of many houses and dragon fruit of the people.
230 houses in Ham My commune were flooded, of which 48 were deeply flooded. One house was damaged and had its roof blown off in Tan Lap commune. The floods also flooded 420 hectares of dragon fruit and crops in Ham My and Ham Cuong communes, Ham Thuan Nam district.
