Choice of the age of 24
As the 2026 military service day approaches, in the list of citizens enlisting for military service in Quang Tri, there is only one female case, Nguyen Khanh Huyen (24 years old, Tan Dinh village, Vinh Linh commune, Quang Tri province).
At the age of 24, instead of choosing a stable job after graduating from university, Huyen decided to put on the green uniform with the desire to train, grow up and contribute youth to the Fatherland.
Born into a purely agricultural family, from a young age Huyen grew up with stories about the revolutionary tradition of her heroic homeland of Quang Tri. Grandparents and parents often told about the sacrifices of generations of fathers and brothers during the war years, nurturing in the young girl a special love for the colors of the military uniform.
In early 2025, after graduating from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University, Huyen once planned to find a job to help her family. However, when the locality deployed military recruitment work, she thought seriously and boldly wrote a voluntary enlistment application.
I want to experience the police environment to train myself, live disciplinedly and become more mature. If I am a young person and don't try my hand, I will regret it later," Huyen shared.

Huyen's decision initially surprised the family. As a daughter, and still young, her parents worried that their daughter would be struggling and away from home. Ms. Mai Thi Thu Hang, Huyen's mother, said that in the early days of hearing her daughter express her wishes, the family had many worries.
In the first few nights, I also thought a lot because I felt sorry for my child. But seeing my child determined and thoughtful, the family respects his choice. We are proud that our child has a sense of responsibility to his homeland," Ms. Hang confided.
Pioneering spirit
According to the Military Command of Vinh Linh commune, in this year's military service, the locality has many young people enthusiastically enlisting, but Huyen is the only female citizen who volunteered to enlist. Before being recruited, Huyen participated in all preliminary selection and health check-ups in accordance with regulations.
Mr. Nguyen Thien Tung - Chairman of Vinh Linh Commune People's Committee said that in the 2026 recruitment phase, the locality has 8 citizens fulfilling the obligation to participate in the People's Police. Notably, Khanh Huyen is a female case who boldly wrote a voluntary application.
Huyen's voluntary enlistment shows the pioneering spirit and responsibility of today's youth. This is very commendable, a role model for future generations to follow. We believe that he will promote the tradition of his homeland, strive to train, and complete all assigned tasks well," Mr. Tung expressed.
Before enlisting, the Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune and departments, mass organizations, Commune Military Command, and Commune Police organized visits and encouragement to citizens preparing to enlist as well as citizens completing military service returning to their localities.
Close to the military service handover ceremony, in a small house in Tan Dinh village, the atmosphere was both bustling and mixed with a bit of reluctance. Huyen took advantage of arranging family work, visiting relatives and friends. Many relatives and friends came to congratulate and encourage the young girl to maintain her spirit and complete her tasks well.
