After a long period of delay, the An Phu intersection project (HCMC) with a total capital of more than VND 3,400 billion is being accelerated by the investor and construction units.
Recorded at the large construction site on October 5, the urgent working atmosphere, with many overpass and underpass items, has gradually revealed a clear shape, promising to significantly reduce traffic pressure at the eastern gateway of the city.
The construction site has expanded the barrier area, with hundreds of workers and machines operating continuously. Important items such as the N2 overpass branch (right turn from Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway to Mai Chi Tho Street) and the HC1-02 underpass along with other overpass branches such as N3, N4 (connecting Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong) are gradually taking shape.
The expansion of the barrier at the Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong intersection to deploy the overpass branch forces vehicles traveling directly on Mai Chi Tho Street to divert to the temporary road. Similarly, at the intersection between Mai Chi Tho and Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway, the construction of the overpass also occupies a large area, making it difficult for people to move.
The Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (Traffic Board) said that after nearly three years of construction since the end of 2022, the project has reached more than 70% of the total volume. The two priority items and the high level of construction is the N2 bridge branch and the HC1-02 underpass.
The N2 bridge branch (for vehicles turning right from the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway to Mai Chi Tho Street, towards Vo Nguyen Giap Street) has reached 55% of the volume. Currently, the project is being constructed simultaneously with three main points, with the goal of completion and opening to traffic on December 31, 2025.
The HC1-02 underpass is 760 m long, with a scale of 4 lanes in both directions, directly connecting the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway with Mai Chi Tho Street (towards the Saigon River tunnel). This project has reached about 73% of the volume, with 7 construction teams operating continuously.
The Traffic Department added that from October 2025, the underpass construction progress will be further accelerated after infrastructure problems, especially the relocation and reconstruction of the D400 water pipeline and 12 power cables, are handled. The HC1-02 underpass is expected to be completed and put into operation before the Lunar New Year 2026.
The operation of the N2 bridge branch and the HC1-02 underpass is expected to help reduce traffic pressure by up to 80% at the An Phu intersection.
Currently, behind the barrier is the sound of machines resounding, workers working enthusiastically. However, outside, people are still struggling to move through the intersection. Mr. Nguyen Hong Luan (residing in An Khanh ward) shared: "It is very difficult to travel here every day because of traffic jams. The road is narrowed due to the project, and the increased waiting time for lights is prolonged, causing traffic congestion and making it very difficult to move".
The An Phu intersection project plays the role of a direct connection point between Mai Chi Tho axis and the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway, holding the key position of the eastern gateway. The completion of the entire project not only solves the current traffic pressure but is also ready to welcome a sudden increase in the number of vehicles when the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway is expanded by the end of 2026 and Long Thanh International Airport officially goes into operation from June 2026.
