On July 21, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Ngai province) issued a document requesting the People's Committee of Ia Loi commune to urgently deploy emergency measures to prevent and control rabies after testing positive for rabies virus on a dog head sample in village 7.
Previously, the People's Committee of Ia Toi commune said that at around 9:30 a.m. on July 9, people in village 7 discovered two dogs suspected of being rabies with unusual symptoms such as spongy water, foaming at the mouth, biting people and 9 other dogs.
Immediately afterwards, the authorities pursued and caught these two dogs, but only controlled and caught a black dog, weighing about 12 - 15kg. Proceeding to collect samples of the disease ( dog head) and send them to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II for testing for rabies virus. The remaining child is yellow, weighing about 12kg and has not yet been caught.
On the evening of July 10, the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II responded to the results of the samples testing positive for rabies virus using the RT-PCR method.
Taking 2 samples ( dog head) out of a total of 9 dogs suspected of being bitten by 2 dogs with rabies to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing Center II for rabies virus testing. As a result, 1 sample was found to be positive for rabies virus using RT-PCR method.
Currently, local authorities are continuing to catch the remaining dogs and implementing epidemic control measures throughout the area.
Faced with the complicated developments of rabies in Ia Loi commune (Quang Ngai province), the authorities are implementing a series of urgent measures to control, contain and extinguish the outbreak, preventing the epidemic from spreading.
To promptly control and extinguish the outbreak, not allowing it to spread widely, the Department requested Ia Toi commune to quickly review cases of dog bites to guide health monitoring and treatment. Strengthen supervision and early detection of animals suspected of being sick.
Along with that, urgently vaccinate dogs and cats and establish a team to catch stray dogs to strictly control outbreaks. Absolutely do not buy, sell, or transport dogs and cats out of the epidemic area, ensuring that participants in the fight against the epidemic must be fully equipped with personal protective equipment.
According to statistics, Ia Toi commune currently has a total of 290 dogs. Up to this point, the locality has destroyed 15 dogs suspected of being rabies. Two cases of people being bitten by dogs have been vaccinated with rabies vaccine and serum.
Ia Toi commune has an area of 760km2, the largest among the communes of Quang Ngai province, with a population of 7,200 people. This is a border commune with large terrain and scattered population, mainly ethnic minorities, making disease control difficult.
