On the afternoon of November 26, the Management Board of Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve (Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province) confirmed that the unit had just recorded an individual moon bear living in the reserve.
The discovered individual Moon Bear weighed about 150kg, this is an endangered species, belonging to the IB group of endangered and rare. The Moon Bear has the scientific name Ursus thibetanus or Ursus tibetanus, also known as the Tibetan Black Bear, Himalayan Black Bear or Asian Black Bear.
The Asiatic Black Bear is listed in the IUCN Red List as vulnerable among endangered animals.
Mr. Ha Van Hoan - Director of the Management Board of Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve said that the sun bear was discovered through a digital camera trap that the unit coordinated with WWF to place in the natural forest area.
Previously, through camera trapping activities, many animals listed in the Vietnam Red Book and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Book were recorded, such as red-faced monkeys, pangolins, striped rabbits, white pheasants, red-shanked douc langurs, white-naped langurs, and many species of birds, weasels, civets, wild boars, etc.
"After discovering the sun bear, we have planned to implement protection measures," said Mr. Ha Van Hoan.
