On April 9, at the Command (BTL) of Coast Guard Region 4 (Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang province), the Steering Committee of the Vietnam Coast Guard on IUU organized a Conference to draw experience from the implementation of a peak period of drastic struggle, determined to prevent and stop the situation of fishing vessels violating illegal, unreported, unregulated seafood exploitation and coordination to serve the EC Inspection Delegation working in Vietnam for the 5th time.
The conference focused on assessing the current situation, the results of leadership and direction on the peak period of combating IUU fishing, coordination to serve the EC Inspection Delegation working, clearly reporting on issues that have been explained; assessing existing problems, limitations, and recommendations that the EC Inspection Delegation has pointed out, clearly identifying the causes and responsibilities in organizing implementation.
Notably: Propaganda for 1,553 fishing vessels/8,218 fishermen in the anchorage area; dissemination of laws on combating IUU fishing to 9,280 officials, people, and fishermen; deployment of over 90 ships to perform IUU fishing prevention tasks in key sea areas, especially the sea area bordering Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam - Cambodia historical waters; inspection, making records, and sanctioning administrative violations in 127 cases/127 ships, with a total fine of over 1.8 billion VND; propaganda and reminders for 1,964 turns of fishing vessels losing monitoring signals; inspection, arrest, investigation, verification, and handling of 22 cases/23 ships with violations of regulations on combating IUU fishing...

Speaking at the conclusion of the Conference, Major General Le Dinh Cuong - Commander of the Vietnam Coast Guard emphasized: The peak period of fighting against IUU fishing in the past time has achieved important results, creating clear changes in awareness and actions of all levels, sectors, localities and fishermen. The situation of fishing vessels violating foreign waters has been gradually curbed, contributing to enhancing national prestige in implementing international commitments, especially towards the EC.
Continue to strictly maintain forces and vehicles, strengthen patrols, inspections and controls, strictly manage sea areas; closely coordinate with coordinating forces, functional agencies, and local authorities; strengthen inspection and supervision of the implementation of IUU fishing prevention tasks by agencies and units on the ground. At the same time, do a good job of coordinating to serve the EC Inspection Delegation working in Vietnam for the 6th time.
