As Lao Dong reported, due to the impact of storm No. 5 (KAJIKI) causing heavy rain since the end of August, the river water level rose, the strong flow caused the right bank of the Red River through Tam Nong commune, Phu Tho province (Huong Non commune, the old Tam Nong district) to suffer serious landslides.
According to the report of the local government, the area between Huong Non and the section Km72+400 to Km73+300 has continuously suffered landslides, eroding from 5 - 14m deep and has washed away more than 15 hectares of cropland. The landslides threaten the property and lives of hundreds of households living outside the dike.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters on September 9, the riverbank landslide section is nearly 1km long, many landslides are very high, above which are vegetation land, fences of the people and rural concrete roads... In particular, the section Km73+100 to Km73+300, the landslide has approached the residential area, directly affecting house number 81, residential area 12.
Recently, an emergency embankment project to handle landslides has been implemented, many excavators and trucks carrying rocks have arrived to construct the embankment.
Ms. Tran Thi Dung - a resident of Zone 12, the old Huong Non Commune (now Tam Nong Commune) - said that she has lived here for many years, but has never seen such a large landslide on the Red River bank. For more than half a month since the riverbank collapsed, Ms. Dung has been very worried, just afraid that "river god will swallow up the village". Now, Ms. Dung and many people can feel more secure as the embankment project has been implemented quickly.
"The landslide is very high, if the landslide reaches people's homes, perhaps nothing can be intact. Fortunately, the press informed and all levels took action to handle the situation. In recent days, seeing people mobilizing machinery, human resources and many large blocks of stone to build embankments, we are very happy, now we can sleep well".
After the landslide occurred, the People's Committee of Phu Tho province announced a natural disaster emergency situation and decided to invest 7.5 billion VND to build a protective embankment with loose rock holes, creating an anti-landslide anti-lock mechanism.
The People's Committee of Phu Tho province assigned the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment to be the project investor, organize the construction to ensure progress, quality, and fully comply with construction investment procedures according to regulations. Completion time is before December 31, 2025.
Mr. Do Hung Son - Chairman of Tam Nong Commune People's Committee - said that immediately after the landslide occurred, the province directed the implementation of emergency embankments to protect people, ensure the safety of life, help people stabilize their lives and production.
After completion, the project will be handed over to the People's Committee of Tam Nong commune for management and exploitation.
