On September 24, the People's Committee of Vinh Long province issued a decision to announce an emergency situation of landslides on the embankment to prevent erosion of the Giao Hoa river bank (Chau Thanh hamlet, Giao Long commune) with a length of 60m, with a dangerous level.
Previously, on August 10, a 30m long section of the riverbank in this area was eroded, showing signs of continuing to erode by 30m. The landslides damaged the embankment, causing subsidence and cracking of rural traffic roads, affecting people's lives and production.
The estimated damage caused by the incident is over 2 billion VND. The initial cause was determined to be the appearance of two deep holes creating a whirlwind, leading to riverbank erosion.
If not reinforced in time, landslides can spread, causing flooding of about 43 hectares of productive land, affecting 247 houses with 805 people, 1 high school and many other infrastructure works.
The Provincial People's Committee requested functional agencies and local authorities to deploy response measures, limit damage, put up signs, warnings and notices to people, arrange forces to monitor, prepare materials, human resources, and means to be ready to respond, and support people to evacuate to safe places.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment coordinates with the commune government to monitor developments, summarize damage, coordinate with the provincial Agricultural Project Management Board to survey and propose solutions to handle incidents.
