Outrage over prolonged accumulation of garbage
Over the past time, the situation of household waste congestion in Dong Hai, Long Vinh and Long Thanh communes (Vinh Long province) has caused many people to be upset. Due to insufficient collection and transportation of garbage, many temporary collection points are overloaded, garbage is piled up along the road, emitting unpleasant odors, especially on hot sunny days. With more than 46,000 people living in 3 island communes, the need to collect and treat household waste is becoming urgent.
Ms. Ha Thi Gon - a resident of Long Thanh commune - said that at many times garbage accumulates for a long time, causing unpleasant odors, affecting the lives of households living near the collection point.
“Waste left for a long time is both unsanitary and causes unpleasant odors. People hope that collection will be carried out more regularly, if possible, collect it daily to keep the environment clean” - Ms. Gon expressed.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Gioi - Chairman of Long Vinh Commune People's Committee - said that the locality has recorded many reflections from people on the situation of garbage accumulation at collection points. According to Mr. Gioi, Long Vinh commune currently has more than 16,000 people, the amount of domestic waste generated each day is over 4 tons. Meanwhile, the capacity to collect and transport garbage is still limited, with only 1 specialized vehicle, so at some times the collection is not timely, leading to garbage accumulation at temporary collection points.
Proposal to increase vehicles, calculate stable collection models
Faced with the reality that domestic waste is still accumulating in some areas, localities are coordinating with collection units to propose increasing waste transportation vehicles to meet actual needs.
Mr. Vo Dinh Duy Khanh - Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Dong Hai commune - said that the communes are proposing collection units to arrange more garbage transport vehicles. When there are more vehicles, especially standard garbage transport vehicles, the collection frequency will be improved, contributing to limiting the situation of garbage accumulation at temporary collection points as at present.
In addition, communes are also calculating models for organizing garbage collection suitable to the actual conditions in the island commune area.
Mr. Truong Van Huy - Secretary of the Party Committee of Long Thanh commune - said that it is necessary to study the establishment of an environmental cooperative to undertake the collection and transportation of domestic waste in the area. According to Mr. Huy, the centralized landfill is currently located in Dong Hai commune, so if an environmental cooperative is formed in this locality, it will be more convenient for organizing garbage collection and transportation.
Waste congestion not only affects the environment but also directly impacts people's lives. Solutions being calculated by localities, from increasing vehicles to researching appropriate collection models, are expected to soon be effective, contributing to improving the living environment in island communes in the near future.
