After 2 working sessions, the Standing Committees of Gia Lai and Binh Dinh Provincial Party Committees unanimously approved the Project to merge the two provinces. Accordingly, the entire natural area and population of Gia Lai and Binh Dinh provinces will be merged, forming a new province named Gia Lai, with a total area of over 21,576.53 km2 and a population of over 3.58 million people. The new province will have 135 commune-level administrative units (including 110 communes and 25 wards). The new province's political and administrative center will be located in Quy Nhon City (currently Binh Dinh).
Expanding development space
According to the draft project, the merger of Gia Lai and Binh Dinh provinces is necessary, in order to implement the Party's policy on streamlining the organizational structure, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the administrative agencies and non -business units; Saving state management costs, thereby creating resources for socio -economic development, improving the quality of people's lives.
The merger of the two provinces will create a large development space, allowing the two provinces to complement each other's strengths, allocate resources more appropriately, invest in synchronous infrastructure from Binh Dinh to Gia Lai, promote even development and expand development space for the whole region.

The new province will combine industrial strengths, services, tourism, seaports and existing logistics of Binh Dinh with the potential of agriculture, ecological resources and strategic location of the Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia development triangle area of Gia Lai. The transportation system, especially Highway 19 and Quy Nhon - Pleiku Expressway Project, will create favorable conditions for freight transport and develop the East -West economic corridor.
In addition, the merger also has important significance in terms of national defense and security, especially in building a solid defense zone, strengthening the sovereignty of the western border and sea and islands.
Gia Lai and Binh Dinh also have many cultural similarities. Both provinces have a Ba Na community living with similar customs, festivals and cultural activities, and are strongly influenced by Kinh culture throughout history. Both are associated with the Tay Son movement.
