Riverbank erosion diễn biến phức tạp, many roads bị chia cắt
Since the beginning of the year, many communes and wards in Can Tho have continuously experienced landslides with increasingly serious levels.
Records along the Rach Vop River, Thoi An Hoi commune show that riverbank erosion recently has greatly affected people's lives, especially households living along the river.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Son (71 years old) said that previously, the area had high dikes and stable soil, so travel was convenient. Currently, landslides have changed the terrain, making travel difficult and posing potential safety risks.
Mr. Banh Phuoc An - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thoi An Hoi commune (Can Tho city) informed that in June 2026, the locality experienced many landslides, up to 29 sections with a length of more than 1,000m on the mainland side, and 27 sections on the mound dike side with a length of over 1,300m. According to Mr. Banh Phuoc An, the commune allocated a part of the funding to temporarily reinforce the landslide points with melaleuca piles and coconut piles to limit landslides from spreading.
In An Lac Thon commune, Mr. Phan Long Duc - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee - said that the locality has 151 landslide points with a total length of nearly 6km. Among them, 121 points cause traffic disruption, greatly affecting people's travel, living, goods circulation and trading. According to Mr. Duc, if not promptly overcome, landslides will continue to affect fruit orchards, especially during high tides in August and September.
Prioritize handling serious landslide points
Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh - Deputy Head of the Can Tho City Sub-Department of Irrigation said that Can Tho is facing 3 types of natural disasters, including: riverbank and coastal erosion; high tides causing flooding and saltwater intrusion.
With the support of the Central Government and the City Party Committee and the City People's Committee, Can Tho has invested in a number of embankment lines in important areas, such as: schools, crowded residential areas, markets and key roads... According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, the biggest difficulty currently is the very large capital demand for landslide prevention projects, while the city budget is still limited. Therefore, Can Tho can only prioritize investing in the most urgent points.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment has advised the City People's Committee to propose to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to review key planning and projects to include in the plan to implement Conclusion 26 of the Politburo; and at the same time propose to the Central Government to support investment in key embankment lines such as Nang Mau Canal, Cai San River and a number of flood control projects.
Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Agriculture and Environment Trinh Viet Hung proposed that localities shift from "passive response" to "proactive prevention and adaptation"; urgently concretize Conclusion 26-KL/TW into an action plan associated with resources and implementation progress.
